Part 1
⚫ My estranged wife publicly shamed me with our dead son’s robe — then I made a single call that brought the shadows.
Arthur Callahan had simply come to the Fellowship’s communal hall for the evening sermon, as he had for thirty years. But when his estranged wife, Delilah, sent her young lieutenant, Caleb Thorne, to provoke him, Caleb wore the ceremonial robe his son Elijah had earned before his tragic disappearance. Arthur felt a cold fury, a silent challenge from Delilah.
He stepped outside and made a single, coded phone call. Less than an hour later, the Fellowship compound was quietly encircled by a perimeter of discreet, unmarked black SUVs, their occupants observing from the shadows.
Inside the Fellowship’s communal hall, the low hum of distant engines began to filter in, drawing nervous glances toward the exits. Delilah Callahan, poised at the pulpit, her sermon momentarily forgotten, subtly scanned the faces of her congregation.
She caught Arthur’s eye across the room. He remained impassive, his gaze lingering briefly on Caleb Thorne. Caleb, beaming, still wore Elijah’s ceremonial robe, the garment a vibrant insult in the tense air.
Delilah’s smile, usually so assured, tightened at the corners. The external presence was an unexpected, silent challenge to her authority. She knew Arthur had made a call, but this… this was beyond a simple complaint.
Whispers spread. Some members cautiously peered through the large arched windows, confirming the sleek, dark vehicles now forming a cordon around the compound. The occupants remained unseen, but their message was clear.
Delilah regained her composure with effort, her voice cutting through the rising unrest.
“Do not be swayed by external distractions, my children. This is merely a test of faith.”
But her eyes darted to Arthur again, a silent question forming in their depths. How could this quiet old man, supposedly grieving and broken, suddenly command such quiet, formidable power?
Part 2
Arthur watched the unease ripple through the hall, a rare sight in Delilah’s carefully managed domain. The SUVs, discreet yet undeniable, had effectively cut off the Fellowship from the outside world. He saw Delilah’s eyes narrow, a flicker of true concern replacing her practiced composure. She was beginning to understand.
These weren’t just random thugs or curious onlookers. This was Marcus Reilly’s team, deployed with the precision Arthur himself had once commanded in a life Delilah knew nothing about. His past, the one he had buried, was now encircling her compound.
Delilah moved to the center of the stage, her voice regaining its usual power.
“These are dark times, my children. We must purify ourselves.”
She announced a special “purification ritual” to be held the very next day, a sudden decree designed to reassert her authority and, Arthur knew, isolate him further. The entire community was left anxious about what it entails.
