Chapter 1: Lối Đi Cô Đơn

Part 1

👰‍♀️ **My Father Refused to Walk Me Down the Aisle Because of My War Scars — And Then His Empire Crumbled.**

I spent five years in the military, fighting for my country, and brought home scars I was proud of.

But on my wedding day, my father, William Vance, refused to walk me down the aisle. He whispered that those scars would ruin his family’s reputation and his business deals.

My Aunt Caroline, his sister, also advised me to hide them, saying my “differences” would spoil the ceremony in front of the aristocratic guests.

Standing alone at the end of the aisle, I found myself facing the contempt of my own family and hundreds of judgmental eyes. I wondered if honor meant anything when betrayed by the ones closest to you.

The grand ballroom of the Vance estate, usually a beacon of my father’s meticulously crafted image, felt like a public arena. William Vance, my father, stood rigid beside me, his jaw tight.

“Eleanor,” he hissed, his voice barely a murmur, “You cannot walk like this.”

He gestured vaguely at my uniform, specifically at the faint, proud lines on my arm that peeked from beneath the lace.

“Your scars will be a spectacle. They’ll ruin everything, my reputation, the new land deal.”

His eyes flickered to the rows of prominent families, the “aristocratic guests” he so desperately wanted to impress, each one a potential investor in his latest venture. Aunt Caroline, elegant in her silk gown, stepped closer.

“Ellie, darling,” she whispered, “Just… pull your sleeve down.”

“Your differences, they’re simply not suitable for such an event. Not with these important people watching.”

My fiancé, Lieutenant Colonel David Caldwell, waited at the altar, a beacon of steady support. But it was *my* moment to walk, and *my* father stood frozen, refusing to give me his arm.

A tremor ran through the hushed room. Every face was turned, every whisper audible.

“He’s actually doing it,” someone murmured from the third row.

My head lifted. My spine stiffened, the discipline of five years in the Navy kicking in.

If he wouldn’t walk me down, I would walk myself.

This “land deal” he was so afraid of tarnishing, it wasn’t just about his ego. It was a massive, whispered-about project, rumored to involve questionable property acquisitions that could ruin these very families if they weren’t careful.

I took a deep breath, adjusted my uniform, and began to step forward, alone. Each step echoed in the silence, a defiance against his shallow vanity.

Just as I reached the aisle’s midpoint, a ripple went through the crowd. A woman, regal and composed, stepped out from the first pew.

It was Mrs. Katherine Rhodes, wife of Admiral Evelyn Rhodes—the very Admiral William had been trying to impress for months, whose presence here was a major coup for him.

Katherine Rhodes, with an unexpected, almost conspiratorial smile, extended her arm to me. My father’s eyes widened, a flicker of bewildered panic crossing his face.

Part 2

William Vance stood there, speechless for a moment. His eyes darted between me and Katherine, then to the guests.

“This is unacceptable,” he hissed, his voice tight with barely contained rage. “My reputation, Eleanor! You are destroying it, and everything I’ve worked for.”

Katherine Rhodes simply looked at him, her smile unchanging. She then turned her gaze to me, a warmth in her eyes that cut through the icy contempt of the room.

Her hand, soft yet firm, settled on my arm. “May I have the honor, Eleanor?” she asked, her voice clear and calm.

The murmurs in the ballroom ceased entirely. My father’s face was a mask of disbelief, but he made no move to stop her.

I nodded, a silent thanks passing between us. Together, we began our slow, deliberate walk down the aisle.

The focus of every eye in the room shifted. It was no longer just me, the scarred soldier, defying my father. It was Katherine Rhodes, a woman of impeccable standing, walking with me.

As we moved, Katherine leaned in, her voice a low murmur meant only for me. “Your father’s ‘business deals,’ as he calls them,” she began.

“They’ve attracted some attention, Eleanor.”

My breath hitched slightly. I kept my gaze forward, maintaining a steady pace beside her.

“My husband, Admiral Rhodes, has a very… comprehensive investigation file on his desk.” She paused, just long enough for the words to sink in.

“It details some very questionable land acquisitions. All connected to William.”

The name hung in the air, a phantom presence that sent a chill through me. My father, standing frozen by the empty chairs, watched us.

Aunt Caroline, from her seat in the front row, stared intently at William. Her eyes were fixed on him, an unspoken message passing between them.

William’s face, already flushed with anger, now drained of all color. He saw Caroline looking at him. His eyes widened even further, a dawning horror creeping into them.

He realized then that Katherine’s words, and the file, were not just a rumor. He looked at Caroline, a silent question forming on his lips. Was she involved in this secret investigation?
