Chapter 1: The Birthday Mockery

Part 1

🎉 **My Ex-Husband Mocked My Friend as a ‘Hired Actor’ at Our Son’s Birthday Party — But That ‘Actor’ Was About to Expose His Paternity Fraud.**

Elara just hoped Liam’s tenth birthday party wouldn’t be another battleground.

But when her ex-husband, Robert Maxwell, sauntered over with his new wife, Tiffany, and saw her old friend Ben, he smirked, loud enough for half the guests to hear.

“Still can’t find a real partner, Elara? Had to hire an actor for the day, did we?”

Robert’s eyes glittered with the familiar malice designed to cut her down in front of everyone.

A hush fell over the small gathering in the backyard. Liam, holding a half-eaten slice of cake, froze mid-chew, his ten-year-old eyes flicking between his parents. Elara felt a familiar burn of humiliation spread through her cheeks. It was Robert’s favorite weapon, wielded with surgical precision: public mockery.

Ben, Dr. Ben Carter, her old college friend and retired genetic genealogist, simply offered a small, polite smile.

“Robert,” he said calmly.

He extended a hand.

“Good to see you.”

Robert ignored his outstretched hand, his gaze fixed on Elara, his lips twisting further.

“Oh, Ben, is it? How convenient. Always good to have a prop.”

Tiffany, Robert’s new wife, a woman Elara still struggled to understand, offered a strained smile. She clutched Robert’s arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging into his sleeve. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut.

Elara felt a sudden, sharp surge of anger, hotter than the humiliation. For years, she had let Robert’s barbs define her, retreating from social circles to avoid his cruelty. But looking at Liam’s downturned face, the joy of his birthday fading, something in her snapped. This wasn’t just about her anymore. She met Robert’s gaze directly, refusing to flinch.

“Ben is a friend,” Elara stated, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands.

“He’s here for Liam.”

Robert let out a dismissive scoff, adjusting the cuff of his expensive watch.

“Of course. Anything to keep up appearances, right, Elara? You always were one for grand theatrics.”

He turned his attention to the guests, some shifting uncomfortably, others pretending not to listen. He was already spinning the narrative, painting her as desperate, as always. Elara saw a flicker of concern in Ben’s eyes, a silent question. She gave a fractional shake of her head, a signal for him not to engage further. This wasn’t the time. Liam’s shoulders were slumped now, his cake forgotten. He looked small, burdened by the adult drama he was forced to witness.

A resolve hardened within Elara. She wouldn’t let Robert win this psychological warfare again. Not in front of Liam. Not ever again. His public cruelty was relentless, but there was a brittle edge to his confidence now, a smugness that seemed almost performative. What was he trying so hard to hide? His gaze darted away for a moment, an almost imperceptible twitch, before settling back on her with renewed, unsettling intensity.

What exactly did Robert Maxwell fear so much that he had to be this cruel?

Part 2

The birthday party felt like a battle lost, even if Robert thought he’d won. Liam had retreated to his room, his presents unopened, his spirit dampened. I found Ben on the patio, quietly observing the remaining guests, his expression thoughtful.

“I can’t do this anymore, Ben,” I admitted, my voice low.

“The way he talks to me, in front of Liam.”

Ben nodded slowly, turning to face me. He didn’t offer empty platitudes, just a steady, calm presence.

“He wants to cut you off,” Ben said.

“Isolate you completely.”

I looked out at the darkening yard, the leftover streamers fluttering gently in the evening breeze. Robert’s public mockery was just one part of it. His new life with Tiffany seemed too perfect, too sudden.

“It’s not just the insults,” I continued.

“There’s something else.”

“His new money. The way he flaunts it.”

I leaned against the railing, twisting a loose thread on my dress. Robert had been tight with money after the divorce, making sure I struggled. But now, he and Tiffany lived in a sprawling estate, drove luxury cars, and Penelope, their baby daughter, wore designer clothes.

“He cut corners on child support for Liam,” I whispered.

“Then suddenly, he’s a millionaire with Tiffany.”

“It doesn’t add up.”

Ben listened, his gaze fixed on mine. He knew Robert’s manipulative nature from our college days, how he always sought an advantage. That’s why I had called him. He was a retired genetic genealogist, sharp and discreet, a rare combination.

“There have been rumors,” I ventured carefully.

“Whispers around the old crowd.”

“About Tiffany’s family wealth, and Penelope.”

Ben’s eyebrows arched slightly. He waited for me to elaborate.

“I know it sounds crazy,” I said.

“But could you… discreetly look into things?”

“Specifically, anything unusual around Penelope’s birth or Tiffany’s family inheritance?”

A long moment passed. Ben considered my request, his eyes unblinking. I felt a pang of nervousness, wondering if I was asking too much.

“It might be nothing,” I added quickly.

“Just my paranoia after years of Robert.”

Ben finally spoke, his voice quiet.

“I understand, Elara.”

“I’ll see what I can find.”

He started with public records, subtle inquiries into Tiffany’s family trust, and any new financial dealings Robert had made. Weeks later, Ben called. His voice was guarded, a stark contrast to his usual easy tone.

“I found something,” he stated.

“An unusual amendment to Robert’s will, made very recently.”

My breath hitched. Robert had barely updated his will since Liam was born, always putting it off. This was new.

“And there are whispers,” Ben continued.

“About a private clinic. Very discreet. It’s come up a few times, connected to Robert’s name.”

A private clinic? What could Robert possibly need a private clinic for, especially one described as “discreet”? What exactly had Ben uncovered, and what did it mean for Robert’s carefully constructed life?
