Part 1
🏚️ **My brother wanted to ban me from our family farm—then my daughter’s whimper changed everything.**
I was 24 minutes late for the most important “meeting” of my life. A sleepy baby was clutched in my arms.
My estranged older brother, Elias, the notoriously strict owner of Blackbriar Farm, glared at me from across his cluttered office. His face was a thundercloud.
I braced for the familiar, cutting dismissal. I dreaded the moment he would declare me unfit to even set foot on the family land.
But then, as my daughter, Lila, stirred and let out a small, almost imperceptible whimper, a strange flicker crossed his eyes. It wasn’t anger, but something else I couldn’t quite place.
His gaze hardened again.
Elias didn’t dismiss me.
“You’ll take the caretaker position,” he said, his voice flat.
My jaw almost dropped. He was offering a live-in caretaker role for the crumbling Blackbriar Farm.
But his next words were a torrent of strict, almost ritualistic conditions.
I wasn’t to enter the west wing, or the attic, under any circumstances.
“Certain areas are off-limits, completely,” he stated, his eyes fixed on mine. “You understand?”
I nodded, my mind reeling. This wasn’t the Elias I knew.
As I settled into the old farmhouse later, the air felt heavy. Dust motes danced in the sparse light.
Lila, now awake, lay in her crib in the nursery. She cooed softly, her tiny hand reaching towards an empty corner of the room.
A strange, knowing look filled her eyes.
Part 2
The silence of Blackbriar Farm settled over us that first night, heavy and watchful. It kept me restless in the unfamiliar bed.
Elias arrived promptly the next morning, carrying a clipboard. He handed me a list of chores, each one oddly specific and almost nonsensical.
“And remember,” he added, his gaze sweeping the hallway, “the west wing and the attic are always off-limits.”
Later, as I carried Lila through the main hallway, she stiffened in my arms. Her tiny fingers stretched towards a section of the wall.
A faint, curious sound escaped her lips.
I paused, feeling a distinct cold spot emanate from that exact area, a subtle chill on my skin that felt oddly familiar. It was a sensation I’d felt before, a whisper from another world I’d always tried to ignore.
Now, seeing Lila react the same way, I couldn’t dismiss it anymore.
