Chapter 1: The Blackwood’s Whispers

#content-1

Part 1

🏡 **My husband tried to declare me unfit and steal my company while I was pregnant — then The Blackwood Manor slammed its doors shut.**

Elara, eight months pregnant and exhausted, painstakingly scrubbed the antique tile in the grand foyer of The Blackwood Manor. It was a final chore before her husband’s family departed for their Cape Cod vacation.

Three weeks later, on the day Gareth and his brother were due to return, the ornate front door, usually so welcoming, slammed shut with an unseen force. It locked them out of the house their family had owned for generations.

Elara dragged the scrub brush across the cold, intricate tiles of The Blackwood Manor’s foyer. Eight months pregnant, every movement was an effort, but Grandma Sylvia Finch expected perfection before the family left for Cape Cod.

Grandma Sylvia, perched on a velvet settee, sniffed faintly.

“Really, Elara, you’d think after five years you’d grasp the concept of ‘sparkling.'”

Elara offered a strained smile, her back aching. She heard Gareth’s voice from the library, hushed but clear.

She paused, catching a familiar name.

“So, the ‘post-delivery trust amendment’ for Veridian Ventures is solid, Mr. Wallace Finch?” Gareth asked.

Elara froze, her hand still on the brush. Mr. Wallace Finch, their estate planner, had arrived just hours ago.

“Absolutely, Gareth,” Mr. Wallace Finch replied, his voice dry and professional.

“All contingencies are covered. Once Elara is declared… *unfit* after childbirth, per the medical affidavits you provided, full control of Veridian Ventures and all other assets reverts to you. The legal framework is quite robust.”

The scrub brush clattered to the floor. Elara’s breath hitched, a cold wave washing over her. *Unfit?* Medical affidavits? Her own husband was plotting to take everything, using her vulnerability against her.

Grandma Sylvia called out from the living room, oblivious.

“Gareth, dear, are we ready? The car is waiting.”

Gareth emerged, adjusting his cufflink, a picture of effortless charm. He glanced at Elara, then down at the fallen brush, a flicker of irritation crossing his face before it smoothed away.

“Coming, Mother,” he replied, then turned to Mr. Wallace Finch.

“Excellent work, Wallace. We’ll finalize everything upon my return from Cape Cod.”

The three of them, Gareth, Ethan Finch, and Grandma Sylvia, swept past Elara, their designer luggage bumping gently against the ancient paneling. Not one of them offered to help her pick up the brush.

The grand front door opened, letting in a gust of summer wind, then closed with a soft thud. Elara was alone. The house, usually a familiar comfort, now felt different. A palpable shift in its ancient stones seemed to stir around her, a sense of heavy, watchful eyes. She shivered. It was as if something within The Blackwood Manor had just woken up.

Will this new, ominous presence be friend or foe?

Part 2

The silence of The Blackwood Manor pressed in around me. The grand foyer, usually bustling, now felt vast and cold. The raw realization of Gareth’s betrayal settled in my stomach like a stone.

Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall echoed the gnawing truth. My husband planned to declare me unfit, to steal my company, Veridian Ventures, and everything else we had. I had always trusted him.

My feet moved on their own, past the sitting rooms and the library. They carried me towards the oldest wing of the house. A faint, almost imperceptible hum seemed to emanate from that direction.

The air grew cooler as I walked, past generations of Finch portraits with their stern, disapproving eyes. I stopped in the desolate, unused study at the very end of the hall. Dust motes danced in the weak sunlight filtering through a grimy window.

My fingers brushed against the rough stone of the old hearth. One stone felt loose, a slight give beneath my touch. I pushed it gently, and a small section of the wall receded with a soft click.

Behind it lay a narrow, dark cavity. Inside, wrapped in faded silk, was a leather-bound journal. The pages were yellowed and brittle with age. I pulled it out, my heart thumping.

The script inside was elegant, flowing. It spoke of Seraphina Finch, an ancestor from centuries past, who had faced a similar betrayal. She wrote of “The Silent Watcher,” the manor’s own spirit, awakening to protect those within its walls who suffered. A protective entity that guarded Finch women in distress.

As I read, a low rumble vibrated through the floorboards beneath my feet. The ancient chandelier above me swayed with a soft, metallic chime. It was as if the house itself was listening, breathing in my anguish.

A chill ran through me, not of fear, but of profound recognition. The Blackwood Manor had indeed woken up. And it was responding to *me*.

Days later, miles away on Cape Cod, Gareth’s phone rang incessantly. He paced the rented beach house, his face tight with frustration. His brother, Ethan, watched him from the balcony, a nervous energy about him.

“This is impossible!” Gareth shouted into the phone, his voice echoing.

“Our IT team can’t trace a thing? Just a complete system corruption?”

He slammed the phone onto the small side table.

His plan was unraveling. The digital financial records for Veridian Ventures were bafflingly, inexplicably corrupted. Every byte of data, every carefully fabricated entry, was gone or twisted into meaningless code.

Worse still, a frantic call from their housekeeper confirmed it. The critical trust documents, hidden in Gareth’s locked study back at the manor, had simply vanished. His secure, private room had been untouched, yet the papers were gone.

Gareth ran a hand through his hair, his eyes wide with a panicked disbelief. What unseen force was at play, and what did it want?
