Chapter 1: The Broken Window

Part 1

distraught mom **I caught my husband kissing another woman with our son locked upstairs—then he revealed a monstrous truth that shattered my entire marriage.**

I canceled my flight from San Francisco on a gut feeling, catching an earlier redeye back to Portland.

I walked into my driveway at 4 AM.

I found my husband, Ethan, passionately kissing another woman in our family car, while our five-year-old son, Leo, was locked alone in his darkened bedroom upstairs.

I knew, with a sickening certainty, that the life I had so carefully built was crumbling.

He looked at me, defiance burning in his eyes, as if *I* was the intruder.

The cold anger made my hands shake, but the thought of Leo upstairs, left vulnerable and afraid, sharpened my resolve.

The car, our family sedan, was parked in the driveway. Their silhouettes moved inside. I saw blond hair. It was Seraphina Dubois.

Ethan pulled back. His eyes narrowed when he saw me. He stepped out, closing the door.

“Clara? What are you doing here?” he asked, voice low.

My gaze snapped to Leo’s dark room upstairs. Fury surged. This was about our son.

I grabbed a rock. Without thinking, I swung it. The window shattered, showering glass onto Seraphina, who shrieked.

Ethan flinched. His face hardened.

“You are unhinged, Clara. Just like your mother said.”

“Unhinged?” I choked. “You have another woman in our car, our son alone upstairs, and *I’m* unhinged?”

He stepped closer.

“It’s over, Clara. It has been for a long time.” He pulled an envelope from his jacket.

“I filed the papers this morning,” he stated. “Divorce. Full custody. You’re unstable after Eleanor’s death. Everyone will agree. This performance just proves my point.”

My blood ran cold. The papers felt like a calculated ambush.

This wasn’t a mistake.

It was a premeditated strike. He expected me to shatter.

He had ensured he would catch Leo. My heart pounded. What kind of monster was I married to?

Part 2

My blood ran cold. The papers felt like a calculated ambush. This wasn’t a mistake. It was a premeditated strike. He expected me to shatter. He had ensured he would catch Leo. My heart pounded. What kind of monster was I married to?

I ignored Ethan, rushing past him. I flew up the stairs, my legs aching. Leo’s door was still closed.

I twisted the handle. It was unlocked. I pushed it open.

The room was dark and quiet. Leo lay curled under his covers, facing the wall.

“Leo?” I whispered.

He flinched, then slowly turned. His eyes were wide, streaked with dried tears.

He sat up, rubbing his eyes. “Mommy?”

I rushed to him, pulling him into my arms. He was shaking. I held him tight, inhaling the familiar scent of his hair.

“It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here,” I murmured.

I looked back at the open doorway. Ethan stood there, watching us. A cold, flat expression on his face.

I scooped Leo up, holding him against my chest. He was light, almost fragile.

“We’re leaving,” I told Ethan.

He didn’t move. He just stared. I walked past him, down the stairs, and out the front door.

I drove to my friend Sarah’s house. The city lights blurred through my tears. Leo was quiet in the backseat.

Sarah met us at the door, her face full of worry. She put us in her spare room, tucked Leo into bed.

I lay next to him, tracing circles on his back until his breathing evened out. The sun began to rise.

Hours later, the house was quiet. Leo sat on the floor, drawing with Sarah’s colored pencils. He was sketching a castle with a single tower.

“What are you drawing, sweetie?” I asked, my voice soft.

“It’s a brave knight,” he mumbled, not looking up. “In his special tower.”

“Oh?” I asked. “Who’s the knight?”

“Me,” he said. “Daddy says I’m a brave knight when I stay in my room for special play time.”

My breath caught. “Special play time?”

“Yes,” he confirmed, coloring a flag on the tower. “Sometimes Daddy would tell me to be a very brave knight in my tower while he had grown-up talking time.”

He looked up at me then, his eyes innocent. “I stayed in my tower like he told me. Was I brave, Mommy?”

My heart plummeted. He wasn’t locked in tonight because of the affair. This was a pattern. This was something Ethan did often.

The man I married had systematically left our son alone, calling it a game. He had taught him to be a “brave knight” while he did God knew what else.

What other dark secrets had he hidden?
