Part 1

🤫 **My Daughter’s Sweet Babysitter Was Exploiting Our Culture for Online Cash – And a Delivery Driver Exposed Her.**

I simply wanted to make sure my little girl, Anya, was safe while I worked. Desislava, our babysitter, was so sweet and spoke our native Bulgarian, a perfect fit.

But the delivery driver, Mike, always gave me a strange look. It was like he was trying to tell me something with his eyes alone.

Then one rainy afternoon, I watched him hold a piece of cardboard up to our doorbell camera. The words were stark against the damp grey: “CHECK YOUR TRASH CAN.”

My heart hammered as I raced outside. What could be so urgent, so secret, that it had to be delivered this way?

I pulled open the lid, expecting garbage. Instead, my fingers closed around a stack of carefully folded papers – printed receipts and what looked like a handwritten script.

The papers were not what I expected. The receipts showed donations, hundreds of dollars, funneled through an online platform.

Beside them were pages of meticulously handwritten notes. They were scripts for “Anya’s Cultural Journey,” detailing sad stories of our family’s struggles.

I read one line: “Anya looks wistful, holds traditional doll, speaks of homeland hardship.” Another: “Anya performs folk dance, looking solemn for the camera, discusses poverty.”

My daughter’s innocent face, her heritage – they were being sold. Desislava, our sweet, perfect Desislava, had been exploiting Anya for profit.

My world fractured. How could she so coldly use our own community’s traditions for money?

Part 2

My mind raced, but I forced myself to appear calm when Desislava arrived the next morning. I tried a subtle probe. “Desi, have you seen Anya’s special Bulgarian doll? The one with the embroidered dress? I can’t seem to find it.” It was mentioned in one of the scripts.

Desislava smiled sweetly, a little too brightly. “Oh, that old thing? Anya probably just put it somewhere. You know how children are.”

Her eyes lingered on me. “You worry so much, Elena. Perhaps you’ve been in America too long, you forget our ways of supporting family.”

She leaned in slightly. “Some in the community, they might think such suspicions are… ungrateful. Especially for all the help I offer.”

A cold knot tightened in my stomach. The way she said “community” made me shiver.
