Chapter 1: The Hidden Recording

#content-1

Part 1

📱 **My mother cornered my pregnant sister-in-law, demanding a ‘safe key’ — unaware my phone was recording her every word.**

The smell of Aunt Lena Mae’s famous peach cobbler usually meant Sunday dinner. Today was Tuesday. I walked into our kitchen, expecting to catch my brother Darius sneaking a slice before Nia. Instead, I froze.

My mother, Evelyn, and sister, Shana, had Nia cornered by the counter. Nia’s hand pressed against her swollen belly.

“Just the safe deposit key, Nia,” Mother purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

“Your husband’s future depends on it.”

Nia’s eyes met mine across the room, wide and full of fear. It was a silent plea for help I couldn’t ignore. My phone, still recording from my history project, was suddenly heavier in my pocket than any textbook.

Shana stepped closer, her smile too wide.

“Don’t make this harder than it has to be, Nia.”

“That bakery won’t fund itself.”

Evelyn nodded, her gaze fixed on Nia’s face.

“We just need the code for your father’s legacy, dear.”

“For *our* family.”

Nia flinched, pulling her hand away from her belly.

“But that’s for the baby’s future, for our business.”

“It’s not a physical key, Evelyn. It’s the online portal for the community trust.”

My stomach dropped. The “safe” wasn’t a box in a wall. It was the entire fund Nia’s late father had set up for her unborn child, vital for their bakery start-up, sitting vulnerable online. Evelyn and Shana weren’t looking for a treasure chest; they were looking for access to Nia’s future, and they weren’t going to stop until they got it.

Part 2

Later that night, my hands shaking, I showed Darius the recording. His face went pale as he listened to Mother’s voice, her fake sweetness chilling us both.

Before he could even process it, I hit redial on my phone. Mother answered, her voice soft, asking if everything was alright.

When Darius put her on speaker and started talking about the trust, her voice turned sharp. It cut off with a sudden, dramatic gasp.

We heard a thud, followed by Shana’s panicked shout in the background. Darius grabbed the phone, yelling Mother’s name.

A moment later, Shana was on the line. She was screaming that Nia had upset Mother, causing her to faint.

Mother came back on, her voice barely a whisper. She feigned weakness, tearfully accusing Nia of always being jealous and filling my head with lies.

She claimed Nia was using her pregnancy to manipulate us. She was turning brother against sister.

Darius looked between me and Nia, his brow furrowed, a flicker of doubt in his eyes. He didn’t know who to believe, leaving Nia and me isolated, stunned by Mother’s cunning.
