Chapter 1: The Kicked Prosthetic

#content-1

Part 1

I rushed to Leo, my heart pounding, but before I could fully help him up, Veronica coldly declared to the surrounding investors, “He made it up. There was no kick, just a child’s tantrum.” I stood up, looked directly at her, and with a voice I hadn’t used in years, calmly said, “I know who you really are, Veronica. Don’t push me.” Her face, usually so composed, contorted for a split second, and the entire room fell into a stunned silence. She then stepped forward, her eyes blazing, and whispered, “You just ruined your career, Maria. And your son’s future.”

Part 2

The words hung in the air, cold and sharp. The gala ended in a blur of hushed whispers and averted gazes. I scooped Leo into my arms, his small body trembling, and left, the image of Veronica’s burning eyes seared into my mind.

The next few days were a tense quiet. I tried to focus on my artisanal workshop, on the looming InnovateCo contract that was supposed to secure our future, to finally put my past bankruptcy behind me. This contract was everything. It would mean new equipment, more employees, and a stable future for Leo.

Then, the email arrived. It was official, sterile, and brutal.

“Dear Ms. Rossi,” it began, “We regret to inform you that your prospective contract with InnovateCo must be terminated immediately.”

My breath caught in my throat. I read on, my eyes scanning for an explanation. It cited “unforeseen legacy compliance risks” related to my previous business failure years ago. A failure I had meticulously worked to overcome, one that I believed was fully disclosed and resolved.

“Effective immediately,” the email concluded.

I stared at the screen, a cold dread spreading through me. “Legacy compliance risks?” It was so vague, so perfectly designed to be unchallengeable. I knew, with a sickening certainty, who was behind it. Veronica wasn’t just making good on her threat; she was weaponizing her power, systematically dismantling everything I had built.

She was coming for my livelihood, for my future, for Leo’s future.

My hands clenched, knuckles white. The contract, which had been so close to signing, was gone. How would I explain this devastating setback to Leo, who depended on her success?
