Chapter 1: The Paramedic’s Gaze

#content-1

Part 1

🪓 **My own mother watched my child lie unconscious and said he deserved it — then a paramedic’s recognition of my other son revealed a decades-old secret.**

I just called 911 after finding my nine-year-old son unconscious. My own mother, Eleanor, stood over him, saying he “deserved it.”

The wail of sirens grew louder, tearing through the quiet afternoon. Two paramedics rushed through my front door, their faces grim. One of them, a man with kind, tired eyes named Marcus King, immediately knelt beside Leo.

“What happened, ma’am?” he asked, his voice calm but urgent.

I tried to explain, stumbling over my words, pointing vaguely toward Ethan, my older son, who stood silently in the doorway to the kitchen, utterly still. He wasn’t looking at us, just out the window into the yard, an almost vacant expression on his face. Eleanor, meanwhile, hadn’t moved from her spot by the mantelpiece. She simply watched the paramedics with a cold, almost detached air.

Marcus finished his initial check on Leo, then stood up, his gaze sweeping the room before landing on Ethan. I saw a strange flicker in his eyes—not just surprise, but something akin to shock. He took a hesitant step closer to Ethan.

“Wait a minute,” Marcus murmured, almost to himself. He squinted, as if trying to place a face from a fading memory. “Is it… is it really him?”

Ethan finally turned his head, his gaze meeting Marcus’s without a hint of recognition. I felt a shiver run down my spine, a cold premonition that this wasn’t just about Leo’s fall. Marcus looked from Ethan back to me, a deep frown carving lines into his forehead before he finally turned his attention back to Leo, guiding his partner as they prepared to move my little boy.

Hours later, after Leo was stabilized at the hospital and Eleanor had finally left with a dismissive wave, my phone rang. It was Marcus.

“Ms. Goodwin, I apologize for calling you directly,” he began, his voice low, “but I couldn’t shake something. Your older son, Ethan…”

He paused, then continued, “There’s something about him. I feel like I know him from somewhere. Not personally, but… from a file, maybe. An old case. There was a boy, decades ago, who disappeared from a hospital, strange circumstances. It’s a long shot, probably nothing, but the resemblance…”

His voice trailed off, leaving a silence thick with unspoken questions. I gripped the phone tighter, my heart pounding. Who exactly was my son, Ethan, and what dark history did this paramedic somehow recognize in his face?

Part 2

His voice trailed off, leaving a silence thick with unspoken questions. I gripped the phone tighter, my heart pounding. Who exactly was my son, Ethan, and what dark history did this paramedic somehow recognize in his face?

The next day, a Detective Anya Sharma was assigned to Leo’s case. Marcus, looking shaken, met me at the precinct to review my home security footage. We watched, silent, as Ethan repeatedly, deliberately, jostled Leo, shoved him, and then stood by as he collapsed. The cruelty was sickening.

Then, Marcus froze the screen on one particular moment. “Look closely,” he murmured, pointing. Around Ethan’s form, an almost imperceptible distortion shimmered, like heat haze. His eyes, for a split second, reflected an unnatural, sickly yellow light.

Marcus looked at me, a chilling certainty in his gaze. “I knew it,” he breathed. “I went back through the archives. This isn’t just a resemblance. I remembered him from a long-buried file about strange occurrences at the county hospital 40 years prior. A boy vanished without a trace from the maternity ward, and there were whispers of inexplicable phenomena that drove a nurse to a breakdown.” My blood ran cold, realizing Ethan was no ordinary child.
