I spent three days calling my ex-wife, Serena, leaving frantic voicemails. I received only silence.
When I finally drove to her new home, I forced my way into the backyard. I found my 10-year-old daughter, Lily, shivering inside a rusted dog cage.
I tore the padlock off and pulled her into my arms, expecting relief. But she just clutched me tighter.
Then she pointed a trembling finger at the murky swimming pool.
“Dad, don’t look,” she whispered.
I glanced at the pool, then back at Lily’s terrified face.
“It’s okay, sweetie,” I said, trying to reassure her.
“Whatever it is, Dad will handle it.”
My eyes scanned the murky water, spotting several large, black garbage bags floating just beneath the surface. My stomach lurched.
Bodies. It had to be bodies.
Without thinking, I plunged into the cold, still water. I grabbed one of the heavy bags, pulling it towards the surface.
It wasn’t a body. The bag was heavy, waterlogged, and filled with strange, carved bone fragments and dried, tangled herbs.
I surfaced, gasping, pushing the bag to the side. Another bag was the same.

My head broke the surface, my eyes searching for Lily. She was no longer looking at me.

I hauled myself out of the murky water, grabbing Lily. She was still frozen by the pool’s edge, trembling.
I didn’t waste another second there. I rushed her straight to my sister, Evelyn’s, house.
She clung to me, silent and withdrawn, during the entire drive.
Eventually, in Evelyn’s living room, she spoke in hushed tones. She told me Serena had locked her in the cage before.
It wasn’t a punishment, she said, but a “restraining measure” to “keep it quiet.”
My heart pounded. I pressed her for more details, for who “they” were.
Lily just shook her head, her eyes wide.
“They wanted to control it, but it controls them, Dad.”
As she spoke, a faint, rhythmic thumping began from the living room floor above us.
