Chapter 1: The Shadow in the Budget

Part 1

🫨 **A Teen Mom’s Older Brother Gaslighted Her, But Her Toddler And A Strange Series Of Events Exposed His Lies**

Maya just double-checked the household budget her mom asked her to manage this month.

Two days later, her older brother, Dylan, swore she’d miscounted the grocery money by over two hundred dollars, making her doubt her own eyes.

She tried to laugh it off, blaming sleep deprivation from caring for her four-year-old, Leo, but the pit in her stomach told her something was wrong. Dylan’s charming smile felt sharper, and the way he dismissed her concerns, saying she was just “overwhelmed” by her responsibilities, twisted a knot in her gut.

What if he was right, and she was truly losing her grip?

Maya meticulously reviewed the family budget, feeling a surge of pride. High school, a part-time job, and raising Leo didn’t leave much room for error, but she made sure every dollar was accounted for. Her household inventory list was equally precise, a small victory in her chaotic life.

She walked past the living room, where Dylan was engrossed in a video game. The vintage console, a family heirloom, sat proudly beneath the TV. Just a few hours later, Dylan called her into the room, his brow furrowed in mock concern.

“Maya, what happened to the console?” he asked, pointing at the TV stand. “Did you move it?”

Her heart sank. “No, I didn’t touch it. It was just there.”

He picked up an identical-looking console from behind a stack of magazines. “This isn’t the real one, Maya. This is that cheap replica I found. Where’s the valuable one?”

He held up the replica, a subtle difference in its weight and casing. Maya stared, her mind racing.

“I… I don’t understand,” she stammered. “I saw it earlier. The real one.”

Dylan sighed, a theatrical shake of his head.

“You’re just so overwhelmed, sis. I know it’s a lot, but you have to be more careful with family valuables.”

He placed the replica back on the stand. Maya felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. Had she truly misplaced the valuable heirloom and found a cheap replica in its place?

Part 2

The doubt gnawed at me for days. Every time I set something down, I’d second-guess myself, wondering if I’d truly put it there. Then came Mom’s antique jewelry box, a small, lacquered piece she cherished, and it was gone.

“Are you sure you didn’t just misplace it, Maya?” Dylan asked casually, watching me search under cushions. “You’ve been so forgetful lately.”

I finally found it tucked behind some old books in the living room, a place Mom never put anything. As I picked it up, a faint, almost invisible scratch caught my eye on its underside. I remembered it being pristine.

“Hey, Dylan,” I called, holding it up. “Look at this scratch. It wasn’t there before.”

He barely glanced at it, already having a ready answer. “Oh, that? I must have dropped it when I was dusting the shelf yesterday. Clumsy me.”

He gave a sheepish grin, but I felt a jolt. How could he have dropped it if it was supposedly misplaced? I was utterly confused, struggling to reconcile my observations with Dylan’s unwavering confidence.
