Part 1

🐄 **My mother-in-law called me ‘the clumsy cow’ and my husband just laughed — until my father found the bruises on my pregnant belly.**

The doctor said my seventh month of pregnancy would be uncomfortable, but nothing could have prepared me for what came next.

My husband Mark just laughed when his mother, Beverly, started calling me “the clumsy cow.” She pushed me, claiming I slipped on a wet floor.

My father, Colonel Arthur Reed, arrived for a surprise visit. I tried to hide the ache, avoiding his gaze and keeping a blue blanket wrapped tightly around my belly.

But he saw something in my eyes, something beyond mere discomfort. He grabbed the blanket.

He ripped it away.

Colonel Arthur Reed stood frozen. His eyes traced the numerous bruises and distinct handprints marring my seven-month belly.

The blue blanket lay crumpled on the floor. His face, usually stern and composed, showed pure horror.

“Elara,” he said, his voice a low growl.

“What is this?”

Tears streamed down my face. I pulled my hands over the marks, trying to cover them again.

“It’s nothing, Dad,” I choked out, shrinking back. “I’m just so clumsy these days. The doctor said pregnant women are more susceptible to falls.”

I tried to make eye contact, but my gaze kept darting to the door.

“Mark… Beverly… they’ve been so worried about me. They keep saying I’m overly sensitive, that it’s just the hormones.”

My father stepped closer, his shadow falling over me. He didn’t look convinced.

He looked at the bruises, then back into my eyes, searching for a truth I couldn’t speak.

What deeper fear, he wondered, bound me to this lie?

Part 2

Colonel Reed didn’t question me further. His eyes hardened, a look I knew meant he had seen through my flimsy excuses. He marched directly to the kitchen where Mark was still lingering.

“Mark!” His voice, usually calm, was a sharp command.

My husband flinched, turning from the counter. He saw the fury in my father’s stance, and his face drained of color.

“What is going on with Elara?” Arthur demanded, pointing a rigid finger towards me. “And what are these bruises?”

Mark stammered, his gaze darting between us. He looked terrified.

“It’s… it’s nothing, Colonel. Elara’s just… a little clumsy.”

My father took another step closer, his shadow falling over Mark. “These aren’t clumsy marks. These are handprints.”

Mark’s knees seemed to buckle. He avoided eye contact, shuffling his feet.

“Mom just… she put ideas in my head,” Mark blurted out, his voice barely a whisper. “She kept saying Elara was fragile, that accidents happen to pregnant women who stress too much.”

Arthur stared, his mind clearly working through this new information. Beverly.

Suddenly, a distinct sound reached us from the hallway outside the apartment. Footsteps. Not one person, but more. The handle on the apartment door slowly began to turn.

Her mother-in-law called her "clumsy," but my colonel father found bruises on her pregnant belly.
