Chapter 1: The Velvet Cloak’s Secret

Part 1

💥 **My husband picked out the gown to hide my bruises—but my father’s unexpected visit unearthed a horrifying truth.**

I agreed to wear the new designer gown for the charity gala, a dress Julian had picked out himself.

The costume designer gasped when she saw my back. It was a canvas of purple and yellow beneath the silk.

Julian and Evelyn, my husband and mother-in-law, had always dismissed my “clumsiness” as pregnancy fatigue.

But the sheer horror in the designer’s eyes told me my carefully constructed facade was about to shatter.

The music video set hummed with forced cheer. Lights glared down, illuminating Julian Vance and his mother, Evelyn’s, fake smiles.

I sat in my dressing room, trying to project a serene image, but my stomach churned.

Then Colonel Marcus Rossi, my father, walked in. His uniform was crisp, his gaze sharper than any lens.

“Julian, Evelyn,” he said, cutting through the calm. “A word with my daughter, alone.”

Julian’s smile faltered. Evelyn’s eyes narrowed, but my father’s gaze held theirs until they excused themselves.

My father turned to me, his expression grave. He looked at the heavy blue velvet stage cloak.

“Eliza,” he began, his voice low, “I need you to take that off.”

I flinched, my hand instinctively going to my stomach. “Dad, I can’t. It’s for the scene.”

He shook his head, stepping closer. “Not for the scene. For me.”

His eyes held an unspoken plea, a silent knowing.

With trembling fingers, I undid the clasps, letting the heavy fabric fall.

The cool air hit my skin, and with it, the truth.

My back, arms, and legs were a map of horror. Fading yellows, deep purples, and angry reds bloomed across my skin.

Some were old, others frighteningly fresh, resembling distinct handprints.

My father stared, his jaw tightening, his breath catching.

He reached out, his fingers hovering inches from a particularly nasty bruise.

“Eliza,” he whispered, his voice cracking. “What have they done to you?”

Before I could answer, the door to the dressing room burst open. Julian stood there, face contorted in outrage.

“What in God’s name is going on in here?” he roared.

Part 2

Julian roared.

“What in God’s name is going on in here?”

He stormed into the room, his eyes sweeping over my exposed back before locking onto my father.

Evelyn appeared in the doorway behind him, her perfectly sculpted face twisting into a caricature of distress.

“Oh, Eliza, darling,” she cooed, stepping closer.

“Another one of your little tumbles, I see.”

She cast a practiced, sympathetic glance at my father.

“Her hormones, Marcus. So volatile during pregnancy. She’s been so clumsy lately.”

Julian nodded, his voice dropping to a calmer, but no less menacing, tone.

“It’s the stress of the comeback, Colonel. And the pregnancy, of course.”

“She tripped over a chair just this morning.”

My father’s jaw hardened.

“This is not clumsiness.”

“These are handprints.”

Julian scoffed, reaching for my arm.

“Nonsense, Father. Eliza bruises easily.”

He pulled my sleeve down, careful not to touch the discolored skin.

“We’ve been doing everything to support her. The doctors even said it was common.”

Evelyn chimed in.

“All this pressure to perform. It’s too much for any woman, especially in her condition.”

I felt a cold dread seep into my bones.

They were doing it again.

Twisting reality, making my own body a lie.

My father, however, stood firm.

“I’ve seen enough.”

“I’m taking Eliza home.”

Julian’s face went from feigned concern to icy fury.

“Absolutely not.”

“Eliza has a contract. We have a show to finish.”

He pulled out his phone, already typing.

“I’m calling Bernie. This kind of disruption could cost us millions.”

Evelyn placed a hand on his arm, her eyes glinting.

“And the tabloids, darling. We must get ahead of this.”

Later that evening, I saw the first headlines flicker across my phone.

“Singer Eliza Rossi’s Pregnancy Woes: Stress and Clumsiness Plague Comeback.”

Another read: “Is Colonel Rossi’s Overprotective Streak Jeopardizing Eliza’s Career?”

My world was being rewritten, my pain dismissed as a woman’s hysteria, my father painted as a meddling fool.

I felt a suffocating isolation, knowing millions were already swallowing their manufactured truth.

My father stayed, a constant, quiet presence, but his worry was a palpable weight in the luxurious but cold mansion.

Julian ignored him, barking orders at Chloe, my assistant, and taking calls in hushed tones.

Evelyn had already moved on to damage control, arranging for me to give a “brave face” interview.

I knew my father was a threat to their carefully constructed lie, and they would not tolerate him for long.

I was in my bedroom, trying to rest, when I heard Julian’s voice from the hallway, sharp and clear.

“Get out, Colonel.”

“If you continue to interfere, I will have no choice but to file a restraining order.”
