Chapter 10: DNA Evidence and Smear Campaign

👉 [Previous Decision]: You have successfully infiltrated Sub-level 3 and gained access to an encrypted bio-storage vault.

The data transfer was agonizingly slow, each percentage point crawling across the screen of my hard drive. I felt a cold sweat prickle my skin. My eyes darted to the time: 3:18 AM. Two minutes until the new security detail arrived.

Finally, 100%. I snatched the hard drive, stuffing it into my backpack. I closed the bio-storage vault, ensuring the digital lock re-engaged, leaving no trace.

I slipped out of Sub-level 3 just as the first new guard was entering the 14th floor from the main elevator. He nodded casually, barely glancing at me, assuming I was another overworked executive heading home.

Back in my apartment, Maya Lin waited, her face etched with anticipation. I handed her the hard drive.

She plugged it into her laptop, her fingers flying across the keyboard. Hours passed in tense silence as she decrypted and analyzed the data. The first light of dawn began to creep through my window.

“Evan,” she whispered, her voice tight, “this is worse than we imagined.”

She turned the laptop screen towards me. Rows of data scrolled past. “These are cross-matched DNA results. Genetic profiles of LuminaTech employees, matched against the neural samples in that vault. Many of them from the 14th floor.”

“Without consent?” I asked, my voice barely a croak.

“Absolutely no consent forms attached,” she confirmed, her finger tapping the screen. “And these records indicate specific neural alterations being performed, correlating directly with the memory ‘blanks’ you experienced. Julian Kincaid’s name is all over the project leads.”

Just then, my phone buzzed. It was Julian. I ignored it.

Then, my tablet pinged. A news alert. My name, plastered across a major national news site.

“LuminaTech Analyst Accused of Corporate Espionage, Ties to Domestic Terrorism” the headline screamed. Below it, a doctored photo of me, looking wild-eyed and manic.

“Julian’s retaliating,” Maya said, her eyes wide. “He’s trying to discredit you before we can go public.”

The article quoted “anonymous sources” within LuminaTech, painting me as a disgruntled, unstable employee. It detailed fabricated allegations of me attempting to steal company secrets for a rival firm.

“He’s moved fast,” I said, a bitter taste in my mouth. “He wants to bury me before the truth gets out.”

“We have the evidence now, Evan,” Maya stated, her voice firm. “Irrefutable proof of illegal human experimentation. We can go to the FBI directly with this. They’ll have no choice but to investigate.”

“Or,” I said, looking out at the city lights, “I could take this directly to Julian. Confront him with the evidence. Make him confess.”

“Are you insane?” Maya snapped, her head whipping towards me. “He’ll destroy you! He just launched a public smear campaign!”

“He’s arrogant,” I replied, a desperate plan forming. “He thinks he’s untouchable. He might confess if he believes he can mitigate the damage. He might agree to take down Project Lethe, admit culpability, to avoid federal charges.”

“Or he’ll simply eliminate you and destroy the evidence,” Maya warned, her face grim. “He has an entire private security detail, Evan. You saw his ruthlessness in that article.”

“This evidence is our only leverage,” I insisted. “If it gets out now, his career is over. He might be willing to negotiate.”

“Negotiate with a man who thinks he’s God?” Maya shook her head. “No. We send this to the FBI, to the prosecutors. Now. It’s the only safe play.”
