Chapter 17: Lingering Shadows

The air in Blackwood Manor had grown thick with an ominous silence since my meeting with Arthur. Jonathan moved through the house like a storm cloud, his temper frayed, his frustration palpable. He knew I was resisting, though he couldn’t have known the extent of my actions. He saw my quiet resolve not as strength, but as defiance, a challenge to his absolute control. His constant verbal assaults, accusing me of “sabotaging his efforts,” of being an “ungrateful old woman,” were like small, sharp stones thrown at my spirit. He took delight in reminding me that I was “nothing without Father’s money,” a sentiment that was a particularly vicious personal cruelty.

He confronted me one evening, cornering me in the study, the very room where the specialized camera was now fully activated and recording. The lamp on my desk cast long, dancing shadows, making the room feel smaller, more suffocating. His face was contorted, a chilling mixture of rage and something else—something cold, something that wasn’t entirely Jonathan. My “second sight” perceived a faint, dark shimmer around his form, a subtle distortion of the air itself, swirling with his fury. The Veil was feeding, growing stronger.

“What have you told Arthur?” he snarled, his voice low and dangerous, barely above a hiss. His eyes, usually a pale blue, seemed darker, almost black in the dim light. “He called my office today, asking impertinent questions about the deeds, about ‘omissions’! What lies have you been spinning now, Mother?”

I stood my ground, my hands clasped tightly behind my back. “I told him the truth, Jonathan. That you forged documents. That you are draining my accounts. That you are trying to access the Silver Compass, against Father’s explicit wishes.”

His face twisted further, a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. “Forbidden wishes? Ancient superstitions? You’re completely mad, Eleanor! You’re losing your mind!” He took a step closer, his breath hot on my face, smelling faintly of stale whiskey. “This estate, all of it, is mine! Father left it to me to manage, to improve, not for you to cling to your senile fantasies!” He had always twisted my husband’s legacy into an excuse for his greed, dismissing Arthur’s genuine respect for family tradition as “old-fashioned sentimentality.”

“You are destroying everything Father worked for,” I whispered, my voice trembling but firm. “You are bringing something dark into this house, something you do not understand.”

My words seemed to ignite an explosive, animalistic rage within him. His control snapped completely. “Enough!” he roared, his voice echoing off the paneled walls. The dark shimmer around him intensified, coiling and swirling like smoke, visible even to my unaided eyes now. His hand shot out, not in a calculated strike, but in a wild, unthinking shove.

He slammed me forcefully against the heavy oak bookcase, my head hitting the hard wood with a sickening thud. A sharp pain shot through my arm, my shoulder wrenching painfully as I stumbled, barely catching myself before I fell. He towered over me, his chest heaving, his face a mask of pure malevolence. The distortion around his hand, the one that had just shoved me, was momentarily dense, a dark, viscous cloud.

“You will sign over those remaining assets, Mother,” he hissed, his voice guttural, alien, “or I will have you institutionalized! I will ensure you never see the light of day again, a raving lunatic locked away, just as you deserve!” His words, meant to break me, instead ignited a spark of defiant fire within my weary spirit. This was no longer my son; this was something twisted, corrupted.

He stood there for a moment, breathing heavily, his eyes blazing, a chilling satisfaction on his face. He seemed almost surprised by his own violence, yet strangely pleased. Then, as quickly as it had erupted, the raw rage seemed to recede, leaving behind that familiar, unsettling coldness. He smoothed his suit jacket, as if nothing untoward had happened.

He turned and strode out of the study, leaving me trembling against the bookcase, my arm throbbing, a searing pain in my shoulder. The room felt cold, utterly desolate. My head ached, but the throbbing was a tangible reminder. He had physically assaulted me, his own mother. It was a direct, undeniable act of violence.

But as he disappeared down the hall, I heard the faint, almost imperceptible click of the camera, still recording. It had captured every terrifying detail of his physical violence, his distorted face, and the dark, swirling presence around him. It was all there. My proof. The truth, undeniable and horrifying, was now preserved.
