Chapter 10: Michael’s Frame

#content-1

The urgent email arrived just as I was preparing for an early morning site visit.

Subject: “URGENT – Permit Extension Request DENIED – Elmwood Project.”

My heart jumped. The Elmwood Project was a smaller, but still significant, community development Michael was overseeing.

I clicked it open, a cold dread washing over me.

The denial cited a missed filing deadline for a crucial environmental permit extension.

The email thread showed reminders had been sent, but the final, necessary paperwork had never been submitted.

This was Michael’s responsibility.

My immediate thought was confusion. Michael was meticulously organized, almost obsessive about deadlines.

An oversight like this was completely out of character for him.

I called him instantly, but he didn’t pick up.

Leaving a message, I pulled up the internal project management system.

I scrolled through the digital paper trail, tracing the permit’s timeline.

Reminders had indeed been flagged, several of them, routed directly to Michael’s inbox.

But then I saw it.

A single, almost imperceptible detail.

A subtle routing change, embedded deep within an automated system update from three weeks prior, had diverted the final, critical reminder email.

It had been rerouted to a junk folder, which was then automatically purged after 24 hours.

No human eye would have caught it.

It was a ghost in the machine.

My breath hitched as a sickening realization washed over me.

This wasn’t an oversight.

It was a deliberate, surgical strike.

Robert.

He had somehow managed to infiltrate our systems, orchestrating a minor, yet professionally embarrassing, corporate misstep that pointed directly at Michael.

The permit issue was easily rectifiable, a few days’ delay at most, but the implication was devastating.

It created doubt, a crack in Michael’s unblemished professional reputation.

This was a direct attack on my closest ally, a calculated attempt to isolate me, to twist the knife in my most trusted relationship.

Robert was targeting Michael, knowing how vital he was to me, knowing that damaging him would hurt me more than any financial loss.

It was a deeply personal cruelty, striking at the heart of my support system.

I felt a surge of cold fury, sharper than any fear I’d experienced so far.

He wasn’t content to just undermine me; he wanted to destroy the people around me, leaving me exposed and alone.

Just then, Michael called back.

“Sarah? Everything alright? I’m on site, just finishing up a walk-through.”

His voice was cheerful, completely oblivious to the trap that had just been sprung around him.

The weight of the secret, of Robert’s insidious cruelty, pressed down on me.

I had to protect Michael, and I had to do it without revealing the full extent of Robert’s machinations.

The fight had just escalated, becoming personal in the most devastating way imaginable.
