Chapter 10: The Encrypted Confessions

#content-1

Victoria’s audacious legal petition for Leo’s custody had been a brutal blow, a cruel and personal escalation that threatened to tear my world apart. The thought of losing Leo, of him being raised by the woman who had driven Robert to despair, fueled a furious, protective resolve within me. Mr. Davies was already preparing our legal counter-attack, but I knew we needed something more, something undeniable that would expose Victoria’s true character to the court.

It was Charlotte who provided the unexpected lifeline. She called me late one evening, her voice hushed, barely above a whisper.

“Eleanor,” she said, without preamble, “I can’t stand by anymore. Not after what she’s doing to Leo.”

My heart leaped. Charlotte, Robert’s quiet sister, had always seemed trapped in her mother’s shadow. Her previous support had been subtle, discreet, but this felt different. There was a newfound steel in her voice.

“What do you mean, Charlotte?” I asked, my voice tight with anticipation.

“Her computer,” she breathed. “Victoria keeps everything on it. Years of… of her plans. I’ve seen glimpses. She thinks it’s impenetrable.”

Charlotte explained that Victoria, in her meticulous obsession with control, kept all her sensitive documents on a password-protected, encrypted folder on her personal laptop. She rarely let it out of her sight, but an upcoming charity retreat, requiring her to travel for a few days without her laptop, presented a narrow window of opportunity.

“She gave me her laptop to ‘clean up’ before she leaves,” Charlotte confessed, a tremor in her voice. “She trusts me with the mundane tasks. She doesn’t realize I know about her hidden folder.”

Charlotte admitted she had long suspected her mother’s manipulative tendencies, especially after witnessing Robert’s growing despair. The vague hints in Robert’s journal were only a fraction of her own private observations. She had even managed, through sheer perseverance and a little bit of old-fashioned guessing, to figure out the encryption password: Victoria’s maiden name, followed by Robert’s birth year – a specific, petty clue to her proprietary grip on her children. It was a detail only a family member, deeply familiar with Victoria’s subtle narcissistic cues, would discover.

“I need to get you access,” Charlotte said, her voice firm. “But it has to be fast. She leaves tomorrow afternoon.”

The plan was risky, bordering on reckless. Charlotte would “forget” to drop off the laptop after cleaning it, giving me a few precious hours with it while Victoria was traveling. I agreed immediately, a surge of adrenaline rushing through me. This was it. This was the chance to uncover the full extent of Victoria’s chilling machinations.

The next day, as soon as Victoria’s private jet departed, Charlotte appeared at my door, a laptop bag clutched tightly in her hands. Her face was pale, but her eyes held a determined glint.

“Be careful, Eleanor,” she warned, handing me the laptop. “She has everything in here. Her entire life’s work of control.”

I took the laptop, my fingers trembling slightly. This was a direct, digital confrontation with Victoria’s deepest secrets. I sat down at Robert’s old desk, Charlotte hovering nervously beside me. I powered on the laptop, navigated to the hidden folder, and entered the password Charlotte had provided. The folder unlocked with a soft click, revealing a dizzying array of files.

“Oh my God,” I whispered, scrolling through the document titles.

There were years of meticulously documented communications between Victoria and her lawyers. Files detailing “Strategies for Asset Protection and Succession Planning,” specifically outlining ways to control Robert’s inheritance and protect it from “undue influence”—a thinly veiled reference to me. There were detailed memos on how to legally acquire Robert’s startup shares, complete with specific legal loopholes and shell company recommendations.

I clicked on a folder labeled “Personal Oversight.” Inside were documents detailing strategies to undermine Robert’s relationships, especially with me. There were notes about “planting seeds of doubt” about my character among their social circle, and “monitoring Robert’s emotional state” to ensure he remained pliable. One file contained a detailed schedule of Robert’s therapy appointments, including notes from Victoria herself speculating on their content. The petty cruelty of this invasion, the methodical documentation of her son’s vulnerabilities, turned my stomach. She wasn’t just controlling his finances; she was controlling his mind, his emotional landscape.

There were also extensive records of her communications with private investigators, dating back years. These files meticulously tracked Robert’s movements, his social interactions, even details about my own background that she had clearly dug up. It was a chilling testament to her lifelong obsession, her need to control every single aspect of Robert’s existence, long before I even entered his life.

Charlotte, peering over my shoulder, let out a shaky breath.

“I knew it,” she whispered, her voice filled with a quiet horror. “I knew she was always watching him. Always pulling strings.”

I looked at her, my eyes wide. This wasn’t just incidental information; it was a comprehensive blueprint of a mother’s lifelong psychological warfare against her own son. It wasn’t about love or protection; it was about power, pure and absolute. The specific, methodical nature of her documentation, the sheer volume of her plans, was overwhelming. Victoria had been meticulously planning Robert’s life, and his eventual downfall, for decades. The encrypted confessions were irrefutable proof of her chilling, obsessive control.
