Chapter 21: A Quiet Morning View

The office door clicked shut behind me, the sound echoing ominously in Tyler’s inner sanctum. He sat at his large, imposing desk, a stack of legal documents fanned out before him. His face was a thundercloud, his eyes narrowed with a simmering rage.

“Sienna,” he began, his voice low and dangerous, “we need to talk. This isn’t a request.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced myself to maintain a calm exterior. I knew this moment was coming. His casual phone conversation with Julian Finch had prepared me.

He pushed a document across the polished surface of the desk. “Sign this.”

I picked up the affidavit, my eyes quickly scanning the legal jargon. It was precisely what I feared. The document stated that I, Sienna Maxwell, had been solely responsible for managing certain “delegated financial tasks” related to Venture Forward’s Series A funds. It vaguely referred to “unforeseen discrepancies” and “mismanagement of allocations,” absolving Tyler completely.

It was a clear attempt to scapegoat me, to make me the fall guy for his embezzlement. The signature line, stark and empty, seemed to mock my ambition.

“Tyler,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady, “this isn’t accurate. I wasn’t responsible for these transfers.”

He slammed his hand on the desk, making me flinch. “Don’t play coy, Sienna. You were my right hand. You handled all the paperwork.”

“I followed your instructions,” I countered, my voice gaining strength. “Every single one. And the offshore accounts? I had no access, no oversight.”

“Nonsense!” he roared, his face turning a dangerous shade of red. “You’re a junior associate. You signed off on everything. It’s all there in the records.”

He was lying, twisting the truth, and I knew it. He had carefully kept me out of the loop on the illicit transfers, only giving me superficial tasks that created a paper trail linking me to general financial oversight.

As he ranted, I subtly reached into my pocket, my fingers finding the familiar cold edge of my phone. With a discreet flick of my thumb, I activated its voice recorder. It was a calculated risk, but a necessary one. This conversation needed to be documented.

“You think I’m stupid, Sienna?” he sneered, leaning back in his chair, a cruel glint in his eyes. “You think I haven’t seen this act before?”

“What act?” I asked, feigning ignorance, hoping to draw him out.

“The naive little intern who thinks she’s too smart to be caught,” he said, his voice dripping with condescension. “I’m cutting you a deal here. Sign this, take the fall, and I’ll ensure you get a generous severance package. A letter of recommendation, even.”

“Take the fall for what, Tyler?” I pressed, my heart pounding in my ears. The recording indicator on my phone blinked steadily.

He chuckled, a dark, humorless sound. “For the little offshore accounts, of course. For the Series A funds that found their way into… other ventures.”

My breath hitched. He had just casually admitted it. The offshore accounts, the siphoning of Series A funds. It was all on tape. This was the specific, crucial detail I needed.

“And if I don’t sign?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Tyler leaned forward, his eyes burning into mine. “Then your career, Sienna, is over. Before it even began. I’ll make sure you’re blacklisted from every tech firm in this city. You’ll be a pariah. A cautionary tale.”

He paused, letting the threat sink in, savoring the fear he knew he was instilling. “I’ll paint you as the ambitious, greedy junior who thought she could fleece the company for personal gain. You think Madison Thorne will protect you? She’ll be too busy drowning in her own problems.”

The personal cruelty of his words, the relish with which he delivered the threat, confirmed everything I had suspected. He intended to destroy me. He would not hesitate.

“You think this is the first time I’ve dealt with a disgruntled employee?” he added, waving a dismissive hand. “Julian is very good at burying inconvenient truths. And inconvenient people.”

A cold dread seeped into my bones, but also a surge of furious resolve. He saw me as disposable, a tool to be used and then discarded. He had just handed me the weapon I needed for my own self-preservation.

“So, what’s it going to be, Sienna?” he asked, tapping the affidavit with a manicured finger. “Your future, or a futile attempt at heroics?”

I looked at the document, then back at his sneering face. He truly believed he had me cornered, that I would crumble under his pressure. He underestimated my fear, and more importantly, my rising sense of self-preservation.

“I need time to think,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

“You have five minutes,” he snapped, leaning back and crossing his arms. “My patience is wearing thin.”

I stood there, the affidavit heavy in my hands, my phone silently recording every word. The weight of his threats, coupled with his casual confession, solidified my resolve. I would not be his scapegoat. I would not allow him to destroy my life.

Tyler, supremely confident in his manipulation, had just signed his own professional death warrant. And I had the proof.
