Chapter 10: The Gossip Mill

#content-1

The curse’s ledger filled me with a fresh surge of urgency. Owen was stirring a monstrous ancient force, and I was its unwitting target. I knew I couldn’t rely solely on my own discoveries; I needed to assess the extent of his external manipulations.

He had already proven his willingness to poison me, to damage my most cherished possessions. Now, I needed to know how he was poisoning my reputation. His veiled insinuations to Margaret had already planted seeds of doubt.

I received an unexpected call from Clara Henderson, an old acquaintance from my university days. Clara was known for her social connections and, subtly, for her penchant for gossip. I usually enjoyed our conversations, but today, a sense of foreboding settled over me.

After a few polite pleasantries, Clara’s voice shifted, becoming softer, more hesitant. “Eleanor, darling, it’s been too long,” she began. “I’ve been meaning to call, especially after hearing… well, just hearing things.”

My grip tightened on the phone. “Hearing what, Clara?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light.

“Well,” she said, her voice dropping to a near whisper, “Owen has been mentioning… he’s so worried about you, Eleanor. He says you’ve been having some… recent health struggles?”

A cold knot formed in my stomach. “Health struggles?” I repeated, feigning ignorance.

“Yes, dear,” Clara continued, her tone dripping with sympathy. “He mentioned you’ve been a bit confused lately, having difficulty remembering things. He said you sometimes forget where you put your keys, or important documents.”

The vanishing key. My blood ran cold. Owen was using every single gaslighting incident against me, transforming them into a narrative of mental decline.

Clara then added, “He also said he’s been making such sacrifices to care for you, poor boy. Always at your side, trying to help you manage your affairs.”

Her words hit me like a physical blow. Sacrifices. He was painting himself as the dutiful, concerned son, burdened by his ailing mother. He was actively spreading a fabricated narrative about my deteriorating mental state to our entire social circle.

“I’ve been just fine, Clara,” I said, forcing a laugh that sounded hollow even to my own ears. “Perhaps a little over-tired with my research, but nothing out of the ordinary.”

Clara didn’t seem convinced. “Well, if you say so, dear,” she said, her voice still laced with doubt. “But Owen sounded so genuinely concerned. He even mentioned something about perhaps needing to step in, to make sure your… substantial assets were being properly managed.”

My substantial assets. The true motive, laid bare by Clara’s casual gossip. Owen wasn’t just gaslighting me for control of the house; he was aiming for my entire financial portfolio. He was systematically dismantling my credibility, clearing the path for him to swoop in as my “savior” and seize everything.

The phone call ended, but the echo of Clara’s words resonated through the silent house. Owen had successfully leveraged their mutual acquaintance, planting seeds of doubt and creating a public narrative that portrayed me as an unstable, incompetent woman. He was turning my friends against me, slowly, carefully, one phone call at a time.

A wave of profound isolation washed over me. He had not only poisoned my body and my mind, but he was now poisoning my relationships, cutting me off from external support. He was making sure that when he eventually made his move for my finances, no one would question his motives. They would all believe he was simply protecting his ailing mother.

The gossip mill, fueled by Owen’s calculated concern, was turning, grinding down my reputation. I knew now that the next stage of his plan would involve formalizing his control.
