In 1944 Virginia, a Whistleblower Wife Locked in a Cold War Cellar by Her Ex-Husband to Steal $250,000 Defense Contracts Fights for Justice Through Supernatural Clues and Her Son's Intervention
Gideon fumbled inside the bunker, his brass matchbox flashlight casting chaotic shadows. He pulled a thick, leather-bound ledger from a hidden recess amongst the coal, its pages rustling. He had a triumphant, desperate look on his face, even in the dim, dancing light.
“You won’t find anything, Marshal!” he shouted up the stairs, his voice echoing in the enclosed space. “Nothing but ashes!”
He made a frantic movement, fumbling with his matchbox, intent on igniting the ledger and erasing all traces of his fraud.
This was my moment.
I moved from the shadows, my bare feet silent on the packed earth floor. The old coal bunker had an external latch, a thick iron bar that slid across the door, meant to keep coal from spilling out, but perfect for locking someone in.
Gideon’s back was to me, his focus entirely on the ledger in his hands, his head turned towards the stairwell as he shouted his defiance.
With a swift, quiet motion, I grabbed the heavy iron bar. It was cold and rough beneath my fingers. I slid it home, the clang of metal against metal echoing sharply in the confined space.
The bunker door shuddered. Gideon spun around, his flashlight beam momentarily catching my face, wide-eyed with shock, then falling to the iron bar.
He rattled the door, testing it. It held fast.
“What in God’s name?!” His voice was a strangled roar, laced with disbelief and fury. “Clara?! How did you…? You witch!”
He slammed his shoulder against the door. The old wood groaned but did not give.
I held the original, pristine defense fraud ledger, the very one he had been about to burn. He must have dropped it in his shock when he realized he was trapped. It felt cool and heavy in my hands, a testament to his corruption. All $250,000 in false invoices, every illicit payment, every inflated expense. Untouched.
“I’m not a witch, Gideon,” I said, my voice quiet, surprisingly steady after months of silence. “I’m the auditor you tried to bury.”
From the stairwell, I heard Marshal Vance’s heavy footsteps descending. “Mr. Garber? What was that noise? What’s going on down here?”
Gideon, trapped in the dark bunker, raged. “She’s here! That lunatic woman! She’s locked me in! Get me out, Marshal! She’s dangerous!”
I stepped back into the deeper shadows, clutching the ledger to my chest. Let him rant. Let him reveal himself. The truth was now in my hands, safe and undeniable.
