Chapter 12: The Road Back

The silence in the lower gallery stretched, punctuated only by the crackle of the stove and the relentless howl of the blizzard outside. Julianne’s eyes, red-rimmed and bloodshot, remained fixed on the documents and the USB drive. She was beaten, stripped bare of her power and her lies.

I finally spoke, my voice low and steady, cutting through the frigid air.

“Here are my terms, Julianne,” I said. “And they are non-negotiable.”

She didn’t interrupt, just swallowed hard, her Adam’s apple bobbing. David still stared into the fire, a ghost. Eleanor watched me, her gaze unwavering.

“You will sign over every deed, every bank account, every financial claim to this entire Danforth estate,” I stated. “To me. Then, I will immediately transfer all of it, every last penny of the $4.5 million, every acre, every asset—directly to you.”

Julianne’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with a flicker of confusion, then dawning greed. A flash of her old self.

“And in return,” I continued, anticipating her unasked question, “you will ensure my complete, unhindered passage out of here. With Harlan, on his snowcat, at first light. And you will sign a non-disclosure, non-prosecution agreement. Absolute, permanent silence about my past, about Mia Kowalski, about everything. To anyone. Ever.”

Her eyes darted to Eleanor, then to David. The implication was clear: this deal meant not just my freedom, but the silencing of the embezzlement accusations against David, and the protection of Eleanor’s family name from the fraud Julianne had committed.

“You’re giving it all to her, Maya?” Eleanor whispered, a note of disbelief in her voice.

I met Eleanor’s gaze, then rested a hand on my pregnant belly. The choice was stark. My entire self-made empire, the fortune I had meticulously built, my hard-won reputation, or the absolute, undeniable safety and peace for my unborn child. The decision was not difficult. Wealth could be rebuilt. Peace of mind, and freedom from a haunted past, were priceless.

“All of it,” I confirmed, my voice unwavering. “In exchange for complete obscurity. For disappearing from this life, from this mountain, and never looking back. To be truly free.”

Julianne’s breath came in ragged gasps. The prospect of owning the entire $4.5 million estate, free and clear, without a single legal battle or public scandal, was clearly intoxicating to her. Her eyes glittered with avarice, outweighing her fury.

“You… you want to walk away?” she rasped, still struggling to comprehend.

“I want to disappear,” I corrected. “From your life. From this family. From any claims of my past. You get the prize, Julianne. All of it. The grand estate, the fortune, the power you crave. And in return, I get my child’s future. Safe and anonymous.”

She looked at the documents, then at the USB drive, then back at the fire. The threat of my evidence, the absolute ruin of her reputation and freedom, versus the immediate, astonishing windfall.

Her greed won. Her chest heaved.

“Deal,” she finally croaked, the word a bitter rasp. “Get the papers ready.”
