Chapter 11: One Year at the Bench

The morning after Julian’s quiet departure, the workshop hummed with a new energy. A palpable relief settled over the apprentices. The shadow of Julian’s arrogance and manipulations was gone. I walked through the main showroom, then into the workshop itself, the sole owner of Croft & Holloway Custom Restoration. The tools were mine. The reputation was mine. The future, finally, felt clear.

My gaze settled on the master apprentice’s bench, the one I’d been grooming Leo to take over. I envisioned him there, side-by-side with me, building a new legacy, not just of craftsmanship, but of family. He knew the truth now. He knew I was his father. This was our chance.

I found Leo in the back, meticulously oiling a set of fine gun parts. He looked up as I approached, his expression calm, but distant.

“Leo,” I began, a warmth spreading through me. “Julian’s gone. This is a new beginning. For the shop… for us.”

He nodded, his movements still precise. “I understand, Marcus.”

“I want you at that master bench,” I continued, gesturing to the workstation. “We can build something real here. A true Holloway legacy. Father and son.”

Leo finished his task, carefully placing the oiled parts back into their velvet-lined box. Then, he straightened up.

“I appreciate the offer, Marcus,” he said, his voice quiet, resolute. “More than you know.”

He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a crisp, white envelope. My breath hitched.

“But I can’t accept it.”

He handed me the envelope. Inside was a formal, typed notice of resignation. My name. His name. The date, effective immediately.

“Leo, what is this?” My hand trembled, betraying the shock that rippled through me.

“I know the truth about my father now,” he explained, his gaze unwavering. “And I know the truth about Julian and the lies my mother was forced to live with.”

He paused, looking around the workshop, his eyes lingering on the tools, the polished wood, the faint scent of history. “This company, this life… it’s built on a foundation of deception. On secrets and shadows. Julian’s greed. Your past that you kept hidden.”

“I did what I had to do,” I said, a defensive edge in my voice. “To protect the business, to protect you eventually.”

“Maybe,” he conceded. “But I can’t build my future on top of it. Not on the choices you both made. Not on the way family was used and twisted.”

He picked up a small, worn leather bag from beneath his bench. “I need to start clean. Somewhere else. Somewhere I can build something entirely my own, without anyone’s shadows.”

He gave me a single, somber nod. “Thank you, Marcus. For everything. But I have to go.”

And then, he walked out, leaving the master apprentice’s bench empty, and leaving me, the sole owner, standing alone in the quiet, fully restored workshop, the weight of my hollow victory settling heavily on my shoulders.
