Marcus’s face, already flushed with anger, turned a horrifying shade of purple. He tore his gaze from Julian and lunged towards me, his hand outstretched, aiming for the leather estate ledger I held tightly.
“You ruined everything!” he shrieked, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated rage. “My family! My inheritance! You took it all!”
I stumbled back, clutching the ledger. Julian stepped forward, instinctively putting himself between us. The air crackled with Marcus’s fury, the raw family rift exposed and screaming.
Before Marcus could make contact, before the confrontation could truly escalate into violence, the conservatory doors burst open again.
Chloe stood there, her eyes blazing, with Arthur Pendelton by her side. Two uniformed estate security officers followed closely behind them, their faces grim.
“Mr. Montgomery,” Mr. Pendelton announced, his voice formal and unwavering. “We have a court order. You are to be removed from the property immediately.”
Marcus froze, his lunge cut short. He looked from Chloe’s determined face to Mr. Pendelton’s, then to the imposing figures of the security officers. His shoulders slumped, the sudden intercession deflating his rage into a bitter, impotent fury.
“You haven’t won,” Marcus snarled, his eyes sweeping over Julian and me. “This isn’t over. You’ll regret this. All of you!”
The security officers moved in, one taking each of Marcus’s arms. He didn’t resist physically, but his threats echoed through the glasshouse as they escorted him away, his words hanging in the air like a venomous promise. The underlying family rift, the decades of resentment and betrayal, remained raw and completely unresolved.
