Chapter 11: Marcus’s Routine

#content-1

The relentless pressure Marcus exerted on Sarah was wearing on all of us. The house felt smaller, heavier, each day bringing us closer to a breaking point. My own sleep was fractured, disturbed by the sounds of Marcus moving around late at night, a restless energy that often kept me awake long after Sarah had retreated to her room. I knew I needed to use this to my advantage, to understand his habits, to find his hidden tracks.

I began to pay meticulous attention to Marcus’s nocturnal activities. He was surprisingly consistent. Around midnight, after the house had fallen completely silent, I would hear the faint creak of his door, then the soft padding of his bare feet on the carpeted stairs. He would make his way to the kitchen, or sometimes the small den he used as his “study.”

I’d lie in bed, holding my breath, straining to hear. Sometimes there would be the rustle of papers, a faint scratch of a pen. Sometimes just the soft click of a computer mouse. He was always careful, always quiet, but in the stillness of the night, even the smallest sounds carried. He was working on something, late into the night, something he wanted to keep hidden.

After an hour or two, I’d hear him pack up. The papers would rustle again, a distinct shuffling sound. Then the quiet footsteps back up the stairs, the gentle click of his bedroom door. He was always careful to hide whatever he was working on. I had searched his room multiple times when he was out, but never found any current documents. He was clearly stashing them somewhere more secure, or taking them with him.

One night, as I lay listening, I heard a new sound: the distinct scrape of a chair being pushed back from the kitchen table, followed by a lighter thud. It sounded like a book or a heavy notebook being placed down. The next morning, I made a point of going into the kitchen first.

The kitchen table was spotless, wiped clean as usual. Marcus was meticulous about leaving no trace. But my eyes, trained by my growing suspicions, caught something subtle. On the surface of the wooden table, right where he usually sat, was a faint indentation. It wasn’t a scratch, but a barely perceptible impression, as if something had been pressed down firmly and repeatedly in that spot.

I ran my fingers over it. It wasn’t just a general dent; it had a distinct pattern, a series of light curves and straight lines. It looked almost like the outline of a signature, or perhaps the repeated pressure from practicing pen strokes. My mind immediately went to Marcus, practicing Sarah’s signature, trying to perfect a forgery. Chloe’s warning about how he carefully constructed his schemes, and my own earlier finding of the old Power of Attorney, now seemed to converge on this chilling possibility.

The impression on the table confirmed my suspicion that he wasn’t just planning; he was actively preparing the documents, likely practicing the required signatures. This was a crucial piece of the puzzle, a physical manifestation of his nefarious intent. He wasn’t simply waiting for Sarah to sign; he was making contingency plans, ready to forge her signature if she continued to resist. This was a deeper betrayal than I had even imagined, a direct, personal assault on Sarah’s identity.

I remembered then, how earlier in the week, I had seen him with a small spiral-bound notebook, open on his lap, while he was making a call. He had quickly closed it when he noticed me. Perhaps he was practicing in that notebook. The image of him, hunched over the table in the dead of night, meticulously perfecting a forgery of his own mother’s signature, sent a fresh wave of disgust through me. The cold, calculated nature of it was a specific, petty cruelty that was almost harder to bear than his outright demands.

My plan began to solidify. I knew his routine now. He worked late, he was meticulous about cleaning up, and he was practicing a signature. The next step was to catch him in the act, to confirm my suspicions with undeniable visual proof. That would be the final, crushing piece of the puzzle, the one Sarah couldn’t possibly ignore. The silence of the house, once merely tense, now felt like a stage, set for a midnight drama. I just had to be there to witness it.

The indentation on the table, seemingly insignificant, was a profound marker of Marcus’s true intentions. It proved his cynical dedication to deceiving his own mother. He was willing to put in the painstaking, repetitive work of forging her signature, rather than earn an honest living. This was the depth of his character, revealed in a faint mark on a wooden surface.
