Arthur was escorted out of the chamber, his desperate pleas fading into the background. The DOJ agent, a woman named Agent Davis, turned to me, her expression unreadable.
“Ms. Danforth,” she said, her voice formal. “Your performance today was, as Judge Holbrook stated, ‘flawless.’ Your meticulous documentation of your father’s intentional missteps, combined with your discovery of his encrypted communications, has painted a comprehensive picture for our case.”
She handed me a thick sheaf of papers. The top document was a federal court order. My name, Maya Danforth, was highlighted under a section titled “Active Corporate Co-Signatory.”
“Due to your demonstrated, unimpeachable oversight of the firm’s internal protocols and your direct involvement in uncovering this fraud,” Agent Davis explained, “the Department of Justice is legally binding you as an active corporate co-signatory. This means you hold a direct, legal share of liability for the firm’s actions.”
My mind reeled. Everything Arthur had said, his desperate confession about my mother’s shares, clicked into place. He’d known. He’d known about the clause. He’d known that my mother’s passing had elevated me to a position I hadn’t even fully understood.
“As a direct consequence of this federal order,” Agent Davis continued, “and based on the compelling evidence of your father’s intentional fraud, the Department of Justice is initiating a full seizure of all Danforth & Holbrook LLP assets, effective immediately. This includes bank accounts, properties, and ongoing contracts.”
Seizure. The entire firm. Gone.
“Furthermore,” she added, her gaze softening slightly, “while your role in exposing this fraud is commendable, your position as an active co-signatory, now unequivocally proven to have exercised impeccable oversight, means you were legally aware of—or at least directly responsible for detecting—the malfeasance. We will be pursuing charges of constructive negligence against you, Ms. Danforth, as part of the wider investigation.”
Constructive negligence. My perfect victory, my relentless truth-telling, had not only destroyed my family’s firm but had also legally entangled me in the very web Arthur had tried so desperately to shield me from. The irony was a bitter, stinging taste in my mouth.
