The clang of metal and shouted commands echoed through the upper works of the Allegheny Iron Works. Federal marshals, led by Major Davis, stormed Clara Kincaid’s office. She shrieked, clutching at her dress, as two marshals placed cold iron hand-irons around her wrists.

“This is an outrage!” Clara cried, her voice trembling with manufactured indignation. “You have no right!”

Major Davis stepped forward, his face grim. He held up a thick thread of carbon paper dispatches. “These recovered telegraphic texts, Madam Kincaid, detail your conspiracy. Your correspondence with Mr. Silas Thorne and Mr. Finch, explicitly planning to starve the furnace line and force Eleanor Kincaid out. Your instructions to secure payment upon her ‘withdrawal’ and to have her ‘handled’.”

Clara stared at the papers, her carefully constructed facade crumbling. The sheer weight of the evidence, recovered by Maeve, was undeniable proof of conspiracy and war fraud.

“You are charged with Federal war fraud and treason,” the Marshal stated, his voice devoid of emotion. “You will be transferred to Allegheny Penitentiary.”

As Clara was led away, protesting vehemently, a faint metallic screech reached the upper yard. The drainage exit from the mine shaft had been cleared.

Moments later, Maeve Kincaid and Silas Rutherford emerged from the mine, their faces smudged with dirt but their eyes clear. Behind them, blinking in the harsh light, stumbled Julian, Thomas, and Lucas.

They were exhausted, empty-handed, and utterly broken. Their clothes were torn, their faces streaked with grime and despair. The weight of their destroyed empire, their shattered ambitions, was visible in every slumped shoulder, every downcast gaze.

Major Davis stood waiting for them, flanked by his troops. He looked at the three brothers, his expression one of cold justice.

“Julian Kincaid, Thomas Kincaid, Lucas Kincaid,” Major Davis announced, his voice carrying clearly across the silent yard. “You are under arrest for corporate conspiracy, military negligence, and contributing to the deaths of Union soldiers through gross incompetence and fraud.”

Before they could even utter a word, Federal troops moved forward, placing iron hand-irons on their wrists. The Kincaid family legacy, built over generations, collapsed completely.

The federal government immediately declared the Allegheny Iron Works a seized asset. Workers were ordered to evacuate. Heavy chains were wrapped around the main gates. A Federal seal was placed upon them, marking the end of an era. The blast furnaces, which had roared with life for so long, slowly cooled, their fires extinguished. The silence that fell over the ironworks was profound and final.

Eleanor Kincaid, unheeded and unseen, walked out of the mine’s newly opened drainage tunnel behind Silas and Maeve. She watched the proceedings from the shadows, a specter of justice. She saw her sons led away, her daughter-in-law already gone. She watched the gates of her life’s work close forever. She had won, but at a cost that few could comprehend.
