Chapter 11: The Forfeiture

#content-1

Julian stared at the subpoena, then at the bank tracing documents, his eyes darting between them as if searching for a flaw, a loophole, any crack in the unassailable proof. His breathing became shallow, ragged. The color had completely drained from his face.

“No,” he managed, the word a broken whisper. “This is a bluff. You can’t possibly have… all of it.”

“We do,” I confirmed, my voice unwavering. “Every line of code, every diverted dollar. And federal agents are on their way.”

He visibly flinched. His head cocked, listening. For a moment, we both stood in silence, the only sound the frantic thud of his own heart. Then, faint but unmistakable, a distant muffled hum vibrated through the building’s foundation. Sirens. Coming closer.

His eyes widened in panic. He threw the documents down on the drafting table. “Arthur, wait! We can fix this. We can still… salvage this. For the firm. For the family!”

He took a step towards me, his hands outstretched, a desperate plea in his eyes. “I’ll give it all back. The $14 million, I can wire it back immediately. We can say it was an accounting error, a clerical mistake. No one needs to know the full extent.”

He was scrambling, trying to negotiate his way out of a trap that was already sprung. His desperation was palpable, pathetic.

“Too late, Julian,” I said, shaking my head. “It’s gone beyond accounting errors. Beyond clerical mistakes. You tried to frame me for cognitive decline and financial negligence. You cloned my signature. You siphoned millions of dollars from client escrow accounts. This is federal fraud.”

The humming intensified, closer now. I could almost feel the vibrations of the vehicles in the street below. He heard it too. His head snapped toward the window, then back to me, a look of abject terror on his face.

“No, Arthur, please!” he begged, his voice cracking. “My career… my life. I’ll forfeit everything. My equity in the firm. My shares. All of it. Just… just don’t let them take me in here. Not like this.”

The irony was not lost on me. He was offering to forfeit what he had so ruthlessly tried to steal, not out of remorse, but out of fear of immediate capture.

“It’s not my decision anymore, Julian,” I stated, gesturing vaguely towards the floor below, where the approaching federal agents would soon be entering the lobby. “This is out of my hands. It’s in theirs.”

The wail of sirens cut through the night, echoing sharply as they pulled up to the building entrance. Red and blue lights flashed, visible through the windows, painting the far walls of the drafting room in an alternating, pulsing glow. The sound of heavy doors opening and closing, muffled shouts, and the distinct crackle of police radios floated up from below.

Julian crumpled. He sank to his knees beside the drafting table, burying his face in his hands. His shoulders shook. He knew it was over. His ambition, his greed, his carefully constructed facade—all shattered in a single, agonizing moment. He was no longer the confident, scheming cousin; he was just a broken man, facing the irreversible consequences of his actions. His equity, his career, his very freedom, all gone. Permanently destroyed.
