Marcus, desperate and cornered, saw his carefully constructed trap crumbling around him. His eyes darted to the back of the simulation console, where the power cable snaked into the wall socket.

With a roar of pure frustration, he lunged for it, intending to yank it free, to cut the power, to erase the evidence, to stop the inevitable.

But he didn’t make it.

Chairman Danforth, who had been observing the unfolding drama with growing fury, moved with surprising speed. He physically stepped between Marcus and the console, his arms outstretched, blocking access to the power cord.

“Enough, Marcus!” Danforth commanded, his voice shaking with a rare, open anger. “This charade ends now.”

Marcus slammed into Danforth, a pathetic collision of flailing limbs and furious intent. Danforth, though older, stood firm, a surprisingly sturdy barrier. He caught Marcus’s wrists, holding them in a vice-like grip.

“You will not damage hospital property,” Danforth stated, his breathing heavy. “And you will not interfere with this process.”

At the same time, Nurse Karen Gable, without a word, reached under the console. There was a faint click, then a whirring sound. She pulled out a small, rectangular cassette, the rigged simulation module, and held it up for everyone to see.

Its casing was slightly scuffed, clearly the one Marcus had been using.

Then, from a sealed plastic bag, she produced another identical cassette. This one was pristine, factory-sealed.

“Standard factory module,” Karen announced, her voice calm and steady, as she expertly slid the new cassette into place. “Calibrated to 100% force-feedback. Just as it should be.”

She gave Marcus a withering look. “Some of us still believe in fair play, Dr. Croft.”

Marcus, still struggling in Danforth’s grasp, screamed, “This is tampering! This is insubordination! You’ll all pay for this!”

But his threats had lost all their power. The residents watched, now openly hostile to their Chief of Surgery. They had seen his true colors, his willingness to cheat and sabotage.

I walked towards the simulation bay. My gaze lingered on the perfectly still new module. The micro-forceps felt cool and light in my hand. I lifted them, the delicate tips glinting under the lights.

My hands, which Marcus had just tried to discredit, were now perfectly steady. My previous “tremor” was gone, replaced by the deep, focused calm of a surgeon preparing for a complex procedure.

I looked at the timer module. The digital display blinked: “Challenge Ready.”

Marcus, still held by Danforth, watched me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and impotent rage.

I nodded once, a silent acknowledgment. Then, with a deep, cleansing breath, I pressed the start button.

The timer began its countdown.
