Chapter 18: A Morning’s Quiet Reconciliation

Evelyn received the news about the second DNA profile with a grim nod. Her mind, already churning with possibilities, immediately latched onto Vanessa Reed. Vanessa’s vehement accusations, her almost theatrical discovery of the ring, and her intimate knowledge of the wedding details made her a prime suspect.

“I think it’s time for an informal chat with Vanessa,” Evelyn decided. “Without legal counsel present, if we can manage it. She might be arrogant enough to slip up.”

She managed to arrange a casual meeting under the guise of trying to “understand the circumstances better” before pursuing legal action. Vanessa, ever confident and eager to maintain her public image, agreed to meet Evelyn at a secluded coffee shop, clearly underestimating Evelyn’s quiet determination.

Vanessa arrived, impeccably dressed, a condescending smile playing on her lips. She ordered an expensive latte, her eyes scanning the room, making sure she was seen.

“I truly don’t understand why we need to meet,” Vanessa began, her tone laced with impatience. “Lila Abbott stole my ring. The evidence is clear. End of story.”

Evelyn, calm and collected, leaned forward. “Let’s assume, for a moment, that it’s not. Detective Harding has discovered some interesting things about that ring, Vanessa.”

Vanessa scoffed. “Oh, please. What could he possibly discover? It’s my grandmother’s heirloom.”

“Is it?” Evelyn asked, her voice soft but pointed. “Because our information suggests it belonged to Celeste Abbott. Patricia’s deceased sister.”

Vanessa’s composure faltered, just for a split second. Her eyes widened, and a flicker of genuine surprise, quickly masked, crossed her face. “That’s… preposterous. My grandmother’s name was Eleanor. It’s an old family piece.”

“Really?” Evelyn pressed. “Because it’s quite distinctive. A large diamond, with two sapphires flanking it. And on the inside, we found an engraving. The initials ‘C.A.’ and the date ‘July 14’.”

Vanessa’s face went completely blank for a moment. Then, a slow, predatory smile spread across her lips, but it was tainted by a hint of something else—fear. She took a sip of her latte, her hand trembling slightly as she set the cup down.

“That’s… impossible,” she stammered, then caught herself. “I mean, how would you even know that? Nobody knew about that inscription except—”

She stopped abruptly, her eyes widening again, realizing the magnitude of her slip. The color drained from her face, leaving her starkly pale. She had just confirmed knowledge of an inscription that only someone deeply involved with the ring, and therefore with its true origins, could possess. Her casual mention of a hidden detail, one the police had only recently confirmed, was a damning admission.

The casual cruelty of her initial eagerness to frame me now felt entwined with a deeper, more personal spite. She knew the ring’s true owner, knew the significance of the date. She had actively chosen to use a symbol of my birthright against me, to participate in my mother’s cruel deception.

Evelyn watched her, a slow, triumphant smile gracing her lips. “Except for whom, Vanessa?”

Vanessa pushed her chair back, a frantic look in her eyes. “I… I have to go. This conversation is over. My lawyer will be in touch.” She scrambled out of the coffee shop, leaving her untouched latte and a significant clue behind her.

Evelyn pulled out her phone, dialing Harding. “We have our second conspirator, Detective. Vanessa Reed just confirmed she knew about the inscription on Celeste Abbott’s ring.”

The pieces were clicking into place, one by one. The two DNA profiles, the intricate plot, the public humiliation. It was a cruel, calculated conspiracy, and Vanessa Reed was right in the thick of it.
