Chapter 12: A: 5 Years Later

#content-1

👉 [Previous Decision]: You chose Option A – Fast forward to five years later.

Five years had passed. The memory of Arthur Pendelton, once a towering figure, had faded into a historical footnote. His name, once synonymous with power, now evoked a quiet shudder among old Albany residents.

I sat alone in a dim recording studio in a city thousands of miles from Albany, the sterile foam panels on the walls muffling any outside sound. My new podcast, *Whispers in the Archive*, was a quieter, more academic pursuit. No more grand exposes, no more dangerous confrontations. Just the steady, solitary work of historical investigation.

The overhead light hummed softly, casting long shadows. My coffee, long cold, sat beside my ancient microphone. I was comfortable, safe, but a profound solitude clung to me like a second skin. The thrill of the chase, the adrenaline of confrontation, had long since vanished.

A soft rap echoed at my studio door. Unexpected. I rarely had visitors.

I pushed back my chair and walked to the door, peering through the peephole. No one. I opened it.

On the mat lay a small, unmarked padded envelope. Inside, nestled amongst plain white tissue paper, was a generic, encrypted audio drive. Just like the one that had started everything in Albany.

My fingers trembled as I picked it up. A familiar chill traced its way down my spine. The world, it seemed, was always ready to provide another secret, another hidden truth, another cycle of power and shadow.

The wheel never stops turning; it merely finds new hands to spin it.

THE END – TRUE ENDING
