Chapter 12: A Mother’s Plea

#content-1

I set up the secure video call from a rented, nondescript office space, far from my usual routine.

The satellite connection was encrypted, the room swept for any listening devices.

Eleanor’s face flickered onto the screen, aged by time and worry, her eyes wide and haunted.

She was still beautiful, but the years of fear and a life lived in hiding had taken their toll.

“Mama,” I whispered, the familiar warmth of her presence a balm to my frayed nerves.

“Oh, Sarah,” she choked out, her voice thick with tears.

“I heard the whispers. He’s back, isn’t he? Robert.”

Her hands trembled as she clutched a tissue, her face a roadmap of devastation.

The sight of her, so fragile, so broken by his reappearance, was a painful reminder of everything I was fighting for.

“He is,” I confirmed, my heart aching.

“But I’m handling it. You don’t need to worry.”

“Don’t worry?” she cried, fresh tears streaming down her cheeks.

“My brave girl. I just wish… I wish you had never taken the fall for me all those years ago. None of this would be happening.”

Her guilt, still raw after two decades, was a deeply personal cruelty, a shared wound that tied us inextricably to Robert’s past.

It reminded me of the profound sacrifice I had made, and the endless ripple effects of his abuse.

“Mama, I did what I had to do,” I reassured her, my voice firm.

“You were trapped. I had to get you out.”

“But at what cost to you?” she implored, her eyes pleading.

“My only wish is for peace. For both of us. Away from him, away from all this.”

“We’ll get it, Mama,” I promised, looking straight into her tear-filled eyes.

“I won’t let him hurt you again. Or ruin what we’ve built.”

She nodded slowly, a small, weary gesture.

“Just… be careful, my love. He’s a monster.”

“I know,” I said, a grim determination hardening my resolve.

“I know exactly what he is.”

Eleanor, despite her fear, still clung to a misunderstanding, believing my past actions were solely to shield her from a direct and isolated threat.

She didn’t yet grasp the full, horrifying scope of Robert’s systemic deceit, the multiple families, the elaborate financial schemes that had inadvertently drawn me in.

She just wanted peace, a quiet dignity far from the monster she had escaped.

Her vulnerability fueled my purpose, but it also underscored the immense pressure.

I had to neutralize Robert, not just for my own future, but for the fragile peace my mother so desperately craved.

The call ended, leaving me with the lingering image of her tear-streaked face and the renewed weight of my promise.
