Chapter 12: A Quiet Smile

#content-1

Exactly one year after Reginald Gaines had walked into my office, a sneer on his face and an eviction notice in his hand, I sat at my new desk, the Atlanta skyline stretching out before me. The scent of fresh coffee filled the air. My calendar alert for the day simply read: “Anniversary.”

My phone vibrated with an incoming text. It was from Nia.

“Final sentencing came down. Maximum. Thought you’d want to know.”

A small, quiet smile touched my lips. I pictured Reginald, not in his tailored suits and luxury apartment, but behind bars. The man who tried to orchestrate my ruin, now facing the full weight of the justice system, his fate sealed by his own words and my daughter’s tenacity.

My thumbs moved across the screen, tapping out a reply.

“Thank you.”

I closed my phone, placing it face down on the polished wood. The world kept turning, but for me, a significant chapter had finally closed. Some battles are fought in quiet rooms, with meticulous detail, but the victories can reshape an entire world.
