Chapter 12: Back in the Chair (RESOLUTION / EPILOGUE)

#content-1

The studio lights were dimming. The red “On Air” sign above the door to Stage 4 flickered once, then died. It was late, the adrenaline of the broadcast slowly draining away, leaving behind a profound exhaustion.

I sat back down in the exact same green room chair where I had started my morning, twelve hours and a lifetime ago. The vanity mirror, still brightly lit, reflected my tired face, streaked with remnants of tears and glitter.

Leo stood beside me, his tablet now a familiar comfort in his hands. He tapped away at it, undoubtedly compiling more evidence, building our case. My fierce, loyal son.

Chloe Zhang entered, her smile tight. She placed a fresh touch-up powder brush and a compact on the table next to me, her eyes carefully avoiding mine.

“Ten minutes, Maya,” she said, her voice robotic. “For the post-show press junket. Just a few questions about the reunion, how great it was to be back with the cast. Keep it positive.”

She walked away, her heels clicking softly on the carpet.

Through the open door, I saw Richard pass by. He was on his phone, his voice hushed, speaking with his attorneys. He caught my eye, and for a split second, a flicker of something—not triumph, but grim resolve—crossed his face.

The war wasn’t over. It was barely beginning. The legal battle would be protracted, expensive, and emotionally draining. He had secured his short-term objective: keeping control, keeping my mother’s funds locked, and ensuring I wouldn’t disrupt his televised moment.

I wiped a tear from my cheek, smearing mascara. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, at the face that had smiled for twenty million viewers while holding the proof of betrayal.

The bright lights don’t wash away the shadows—they just make them easier for everyone else to ignore while you keep carrying the weight.

I picked up the powder brush. The cameras would be waiting.
