Chapter 21: A Fragile Peace

During one of Leo’s “special visits,” Marcus stepped out of the room to take a phone call, leaving Leo briefly alone with me. It was a calculated move, one I now recognized as a deliberate attempt to see if Leo would retrieve anything or if I would reveal anything in Marcus’s absence. My heart hammered against my ribs.

Leo, oblivious to the tension, was playing with a small plastic toy car on the edge of my bed. He pushed it back and forth, making soft vrooming sounds. His innocence was almost heartbreaking.

“Mommy, look!” he chirped, holding up his toy. “My car goes fast!”

“It certainly does, Leo,” I replied, forcing a smile. My mind was racing, trying to anticipate any subtle moves Marcus might have taught him.

He then crawled closer, his bright eyes wide with childlike curiosity. “Daddy said Mommy’s tiny box makes funny voices when she’s asleep. You have one too, right?” He mimicked putting something under a pillow, his small hand patting the empty space beside my head.

My blood ran cold. The toy car slipped from my grasp, clattering softly onto the bed. “My… my tiny box?” I managed to ask, my voice barely a whisper. My heart pounded, a frantic drumbeat against my ribs.

Leo nodded eagerly. “Yeah! Daddy showed it to me. He said it was a bad box because it makes bad voices.” He giggled, clearly finding the concept amusing.

A wave of dread, cold and nauseating, washed over me. Marcus. He had found it. My primary recording device, the one I had hidden under my pillow during their initial confrontation. He hadn’t just found it; he had clearly shown it to Leo, probably demonstrating how he had “disabled” it.

The casual, innocent way Leo delivered the information was a punch to the gut. It confirmed my worst fear: Marcus was aware of my attempt to record him. He had not only discovered the device, but had clearly tampered with it, believing it to be the only one. He thought he was safe.

“What… what kind of voices, Leo?” I pressed, trying to keep my voice steady, but a tremor was undeniable.

“Just funny voices,” he repeated, shrugging his small shoulders. “Daddy said it was broken now. Like this!” He made a sputtering sound, mimicking a broken machine.

This offhand comment, prompted by the mandated child, was the turning point. It wasn’t just Marcus asking Leo to look for things; he had actively shown Leo the device, cementing in my mind that he knew about the recording. He was confident, complacent even, in his belief that he had neutralized my evidence.

A specific, chilling cruelty registered in that moment: Marcus had involved his own son in the cover-up, using the child’s innocence to taunt me, to subtly inform me that my efforts were futile. It was a calculated display of power.

“Did Daddy show you where he found it?” I asked, pushing my luck, trying to get more details without alarming Leo.

“Under a pillow!” he exclaimed, pointing emphatically at my own pillow. “Just like that!”

My mind raced. He knew. He had known all along. All this time, Marcus had been confident, perhaps even smug, thinking he had removed my only piece of evidence. This entire charade of Leo’s visits, the subtle searches, had been a calculated exercise in confirmation for Marcus.

The implications were devastating. My main recording, the one I had so painstakingly activated, was compromised. Marcus had found it, tampered with it, and possibly even destroyed it. All my initial relief at having captured their betrayal shattered into a million pieces.

“Is that why Daddy makes you look for things?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Leo tilted his head. “Sometimes. He says it’s a game. A secret game.”

A game. Marcus had turned his betrayal, his attempt to strip me of my legacy, into a childish game involving his unsuspecting son. It was a grotesque perversion of trust, a deep, psychological wound.

Just then, Marcus re-entered the room, his phone call apparently concluded. He gave Leo a warm smile, then his gaze shifted to me, a glint of something unreadable in his eyes. He must have seen the shock on my face, the raw fear.

“Everything alright, Elara?” he asked, his tone deceptively mild.

I forced a weak smile, trying to compose myself, to hide the turmoil churning inside me. “Just a little tired, Marcus.” I knew, in that moment, that he was enjoying this. He was enjoying my shock, enjoying the knowledge that I now knew he had discovered my secret. It was a subtle, cruel triumph.

Leo’s innocent words had revealed Marcus’s cunning, his duplicity, and the true extent of his arrogance. He thought he had won. But a new thought, a desperate hope, began to form in my reeling mind. My *other* device. My backup.
