Chapter 12: The Quiet Aftermath

#content-1

Three days had passed since the lightning microburst and the silent revelations in Vault B. Three days since Chloe Finch and Gregory Krenshaw were quietly escorted from Apex Infrastructure, their careers and reputations shattered.

I sat at my desk in Vault B, the familiar hum of the climate control unit a soothing backdrop. The space felt different now. Cleaner, somehow. The dusty corners were still there, but the air felt lighter, charged with a new, quiet respect.

My coffee, black and steaming, rested on a pristine blotter. Colleagues who once barely acknowledged me now nodded, their eyes holding a new depth of regard. Chloe’s name, once emblazoned on various departmental directories and corporate announcements, had been quietly, efficiently, scrubbed from existence. No fanfare, no official memo, just an absence that spoke volumes.

My phone buzzed on the blotter, breaking the tranquil silence. It was a text message. From Julian.

“Federal regulators just finalized Krenshaw’s asset freeze,” it read. “Vault B is officially secured, Arthur. Thank you.”

I paused for a moment, the words sinking in. Secured. The truth, protected and vindicated.

I typed out a short reply. “Received. Thanks.”

I set the phone down. The screen went dark, reflecting my own calm, unruffled expression. I picked up a new ledger, its pages fresh and clean, and opened it to a blank entry. My work awaited. I returned peacefully to my work.
