Chapter 13: Nine Days Later

#content-1

👉 Previous decision: Federal authorities raided Apex and arrested Julian, but Ethan suffered total financial ruin and permanent blacklisting.

Nine days. Nine days since Marcus Finch had spoken Devon Hart’s truth on national television, nine days since Julian Kincaid’s empire had crumbled.

I sat alone in a cramped, noisy apartment above a laundromat, the rhythmic thrum of washing machines vibrating through the floorboards. The air smelled of cheap detergent and stale coffee. My suit, the one I’d worn to the awards, hung in the closet, a pathetic reminder of a life that felt a million miles away.

My pockets held precisely seventeen dollars and twenty-three cents. My old life, my aspirations, my dreams of Hollywood success—all were gone. Every application I submitted, every contact I tried to make, was met with silence, or a polite but firm rejection. I was a ghost in the industry, an unperson.

Clara had offered help, but she herself was in the crosshairs of a protracted legal battle, fighting to expose more of Apex’s secrets while protecting herself from retribution. She was busy dismantling the system, while I was simply outside of it, looking in.

I picked up an old, dog-eared paperback from the nightstand, its pages soft beneath my fingers. A distraction. The sound of a buzzer downstairs jolted me. Probably a delivery for one of the other tenants.

My gaze drifted to the window. Outside, the Los Angeles sky was a brilliant, indifferent blue. It was the same sky that had once promised me everything, the same sky that now seemed to mock my shattered ambitions.

I had brought down a titan. I had exposed a monstrous truth. But there were no parades, no accolades, no new career opportunities. Just the hum of machines, the smell of clean laundry, and the quiet, gnawing reality of permanent sacrifice.

Perhaps, the true price of justice is that it rarely comes with a reward for the one who seeks it, only the profound peace of having done what was necessary.

THE END – TRUE ENDING
