Chapter 13: The Exposé’s Weight

#content-1

Leo meticulously organized all the evidence: Alistair’s decade-old internal memo targeting “under-utilized” talent, the specific email instructions to the legal team, the corresponding clause in my employment contract, and Marcus Albright’s sworn testimony outlining the deletion order. He printed copies, arranging them into a formidable stack on his desk.

He looked at me, his face serious. “It’s all here, Mom. Everything we need for an exposé. This isn’t just a story; it’s a systemic problem.”

My stomach churned with a mix of vindication and profound fear. The weight of his findings felt immense, almost suffocating. My mind raced, picturing the fallout, the inevitable corporate pushback.

“Leo,” I began, my voice trembling slightly, “if you publish this… Alistair still has influence. InnovateCorp has deep pockets. They could try to bury you, legally. Or worse, blacklist you from the industry.”

He simply met my gaze, his own unwavering. “Some truths have to be told, Mom. No matter the cost.”

This was the emotional twist, the internal conflict that now haunted me. I craved the justice, the public vindication, but not at the expense of my son’s nascent career. The thought of him facing the same corporate machinations that had crushed me filled me with dread. It was a new, agonizing layer of personal cruelty, knowing that the fight for my truth might put him in the crosshairs.

“What about your job?” I pressed, my voice laced with fear. “Your reputation? This could follow you forever.”

“That’s the risk of journalism, especially investigative journalism,” he replied, his shoulders squaring. “And besides, this isn’t just about my career. It’s about your legacy, Mom. And about preventing Alistair from doing this to anyone else.”

His conviction was absolute. He saw the larger picture, the systemic issue. I saw my son, risking everything for me. The love in his eyes was clear, but so was the fierce determination.

“They’ll come after you,” I warned, thinking of Alistair’s ruthless tactics, the way he had systematically isolated and discredited me. “They won’t play fair.”

“Then we’ll be ready,” Leo said. He picked up his phone, his finger hovering over a contact. “I need to send this to my editor. They’ve been looking for something this big.”

I closed my eyes, a silent prayer escaping my lips. The choice was agonizing, a battle between personal safety and profound justice. But looking at Leo, at the fire in his eyes, I knew I couldn’t stop him. He had chosen his path, and it was rooted in the ethics I had unknowingly instilled in him.

I opened my eyes, meeting his gaze. “Just… be careful, Leo.”

He nodded, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. He hit “send.” The article, years in the making, was now out of our hands. The suspense hung heavy in the air, a cliffhanger of monumental proportions.
