Not a single person from my family showed up to my lifetime achievement honor at the Newport Historical Society.
The debutante ball plunged into full swing, a dazzling, almost frantic display of opulence. Waiters glided through the ballroom, trays laden with delicacies, while a live orchestra swelled with classical pieces. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and ambition. But beneath the surface, a crackling tension simmered.
My phone, tucked into my inner pocket, vibrated constantly with local emergency band alerts. Atmospheric warnings blared across Newport radio waves: unprecedented storm surges, high-velocity winds, localized microbursts. Yet, inside the gilded cage of the ballroom, no one seemed to notice, or perhaps, chose to ignore.
Chloe, beaming with an almost manic energy, stepped onto the elaborately decorated stage. The spotlights caught her gown, making it shimmer like liquid gold. She tapped a microphone, her voice resonating through the room, clear and confident.
“Welcome, dear friends, to a truly unforgettable evening!” she announced, her smile dazzling. “Tonight, we celebrate Sophia’s entry into society, and we also inaugurate a vital new initiative!”
She paused for dramatic effect, her gaze sweeping over the crowd, finally landing on me at the back table. A faint smirk played on her lips.
“We are honored to host a special emergency auction of certain… historical artifacts,” Chloe continued, her voice carefully modulated. “Generously donated by Mr. Arthur Montgomery, to fund our new ‘Youth Historic Preservation’ program!”
A smattering of polite applause followed. I clenched my jaw, my knuckles white under the table. She was twisting her malicious act of liquidation into a philanthropic endeavor, performing for her high-society peers.
I watched her, a silent observer in my plain black tuxedo, the leather folder with my damning evidence a heavy presence on my lap. My eyes drifted to the reinforced vault door nearby. It seemed impossibly solid, a silent sentinel in the midst of the swirling grandeur.
Suddenly, a guttural roar, deeper and more violent than any thunder, shook the entire building. The chandeliers above us swayed precariously, sending shivers of light dancing across the room. A collective gasp rippled through the guests.
Then, a deafening crack.
It was the sound of something tearing, ripping apart under immense pressure. The ornate ceiling moldings groaned, shedding bits of plaster onto the dance floor. Outside the vast panoramic windows, the sky had turned an eerie, electrical purple, a swirling vortex of unnatural color. Trees, visible in the distance, bent at impossible angles, then snapped with a sickening crunch.
A violent microburst, an localized atmospheric phenomenon of immense power, had slammed into the Newport coast.
A deafening crash erupted from above, as if a giant hand had ripped through the roof. The lights flickered wildly, threatening to plunge the ballroom into darkness.
Panic began to ripple through the crowd, replacing the polite murmurs with gasps and screams. Plates crashed to the floor. Champagne glasses shattered. The orchestra abruptly cut off, leaving a ringing silence that was quickly filled with the rising terror of hundreds of people realizing that the storm was not just outside, but had arrived, violently, within their glittering sanctuary.
