Chapter 13: The Shell Company

#content-1

Lena took another shaky breath, the confession about the forgeries seeming to embolden her slightly. Her eyes, though still wary, held a new glimmer of defiance.

“He had me set up shell companies,” she whispered, her voice barely above a rustle of leaves. “Months ago. Before you even discussed expanding Serenity Spring.”

My mind reeled. Shell companies? This was far more sophisticated than I’d imagined. “For what, Lena?” I pressed, leaning closer.

“To buy land,” she confessed, her gaze darting around the park as if Mark himself might be lurking behind a tree. “The undeveloped land adjacent to Serenity Spring. He called it the ‘future expansion zone’.”

My heart pounded against my ribs. The undeveloped land. The same land O’Connell had been so interested in, the “mutual project” he was “accelerating the timeline” for. This was the long game, the true ambition.

“He created a company called ‘Evergreen Holdings LLC’,” Lena explained, her words coming faster now, a torrent of long-held secrets. “It was just a P.O. box, really. And he made me file all the paperwork, set up the bank accounts, even sign off on some of the initial offers as a ‘representative’.”

“So Evergreen Holdings secretly bought the land?” I asked, my voice tight with a mixture of shock and anger.

“Yes,” she confirmed, nodding vigorously. “David O’Connell handled the actual purchases. He ensured all the deeds were transferred to Evergreen Holdings, completely anonymously. Mark said it was crucial no one knew he was the real buyer, especially not you. He wanted to corner the market.”

The audacity of it was staggering. Mark had secretly acquired the very land he later suggested *we* expand onto, effectively cornering the market before he even made me a seemingly generous offer to “jointly” purchase it. It was a premeditated act of long-game manipulation, designed to make me dependent on his “goodwill” for future growth, while he already owned the key asset. The casual cruelty of setting me up like this, pretending to be a partner while orchestrating my eventual downfall, was infuriating.

“He told me it was an investment opportunity, that he was doing it for our future, for Serenity Spring’s growth,” Lena continued, her voice filled with bitter irony. “He twisted everything. Made me believe I was helping him build something amazing.”

“And the money for those purchases?” I asked. “Where did it come from?”

“From Serenity Spring’s initial operating capital,” she revealed, her eyes wide with fresh fear. “He funneled funds out through fake invoices for ‘consulting fees’ and ‘property assessments’ to Evergreen Holdings. It all looked legitimate on paper if you weren’t looking too closely. He even got me to backdate some of the invoices.”

The pieces clicked into place with sickening clarity. The investment shortfall I’d discovered in Chapter 1, the impossible transaction date, the vague nature of the ledger discrepancies—it wasn’t just individual acts of theft. It was a systematic draining of Serenity Spring’s funds to secretly acquire the adjacent land, a crucial asset for our future, all under a fake company.

This was the true core of Mark’s plan. He wasn’t just trying to seize control of Serenity Spring; he was systematically stripping it of its assets, diverting funds to his own private acquisition, and setting himself up for a massive profit once he forced me out. He was creating a private empire, funded by my inheritance, while simultaneously sabotaging the very business he claimed to be building with me.

The betrayal was chillingly complete. He had systematically devalued Serenity Spring through sabotage, created a false legal basis to force me out, and all the while, he was secretly building a separate real estate empire with the company’s own funds. He wasn’t just stealing my business; he was using it as a piggy bank to fund his own private, fraudulent ventures, then attempting to casually discard me.

“Do you have any proof of this, Lena?” I asked, my voice trembling with a mixture of hope and fury. “Any documents, bank statements, anything that ties Mark to Evergreen Holdings?”

Lena hesitated, biting her lip. “I… I might have kept some copies. Small things. Because it felt wrong. I just didn’t know what to do.”

“Where?” I pressed, my heart hammering. “Where are they?”

“At my apartment,” she said, her voice barely a whisper. “Hidden.”

The 48-hour deadline was mere hours away. This was it. This was the undeniable, concrete proof Elara had told me to find. The shell company, the land grab, the siphoned funds – it exposed the full, intricate web of Mark’s deceit. Lena’s courage, fueled by her own past trauma, was my only hope.
