Chapter 14: The Build-up to the Stage

#content-1

Inside the packed studio press auditorium, a controlled chaos reigned. Over fifty entertainment journalists buzzed with anticipation, their camera crews poised, lenses pointed at the empty stage.

Network executives whispered in the front rows, their faces stern. The air hummed with the electric energy of a live broadcast event.

At the center stage podium, bathed in a flattering spotlight, stood Julian Kross. Beside him, his mother Veronica, her face alight with a triumphant smile. Julian, looking every inch the franchise star, nodded confidently at the flashing cameras, prepared to announce his promotion to primary lead.

The emcee stepped forward, clearing his throat. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are just moments away from the official signing of the Apex Studios multi-picture franchise contract—”

Suddenly, the side stage doors, meant for talent entrance, swung open with a soft whoosh. All heads turned. The camera lights intensified, photographers instinctively raising their lenses.

I walked calmly out onto the illuminated stage, the murmurs of the crowd instantly dying down to a stunned silence. My gaze found Julian, still frozen at the podium, his radiant smile slowly fading.

Behind me, Maya walked with a fierce protectiveness, her eyes scanning the room. Beside her, Clara Danforth, her usually quiet demeanor replaced by a determined set to her jaw, carried a thick, leather folder clutched to her chest.

The three of us stood at the edge of the stage, facing the bewildered crowd. Julian’s face had gone slack, his eyes widening in disbelief. The triumphant moment he had so carefully orchestrated was unraveling, live, before the world.

The silence in the auditorium was deafening, broken only by the rapid-fire clicking of camera shutters. This wasn’t the signing they had expected. This was something else entirely.
