Chapter 18: A New Path

The air in our small apartment crackled with a new kind of energy, a grim resolve. With the ledger in our possession, Julian’s secrets were exposed, his empire built on lies and blood. But knowing the truth was only the first step. The next, and most dangerous, was the confrontation.

“We have to face him,” Amelia said, her voice steady, despite the tremor in her hands. She was no longer the naive sister, but a woman hardened by betrayal and fierce protectiveness for her grandson. “We need to do this ourselves. This is a family matter, however twisted it has become.”

Serena nodded, her expression sober. “Julian will not go down without a fight. He believes he holds all the cards. He’ll expect you to be broken, vulnerable. He’ll try to manipulate you, Amelia, using your shared past.” She warned, her voice low. “Don’t let him. Remember what he did to Enzo. Remember Mateo.”

Amelia picked up the ledger, running her fingers over its worn cover. Her gaze lingered on the hidden family tree, the proof of Mateo’s true lineage. “I remember,” she said, her voice tight. “Every betrayal. Every lie.”

She then pulled out her phone, her thumb hovering over Julian’s contact. “I’ll call him. I’ll demand to meet him. Alone.” She paused, then added, “At the old hunting cabin. The one in the Catskills.”

My heart pounded. The hunting cabin. It was a secluded family property, nestled deep in the woods, a place where Amelia and Julian had spent summers as children, building treehouses and whispering secrets. Now, it would be the stage for their final, brutal confrontation. The thought of confronting Julian in a place that held such innocent memories, now tainted by his darkness, was an ironic, painful juxtaposition. It would be a specific cruelty to Julian, facing his past in the very place he had forgotten.

Amelia pressed call, her hand shaking slightly. I held my breath, listening to the phone ring, each tone amplified by the tension in the room.

Julian answered on the third ring, his voice smooth and confident, devoid of any hint of concern. “Amelia, darling! To what do I owe the pleasure? Still fretting over that little… misunderstanding?” His casual dismissal of Mateo’s disappearance, his patronizing tone, made my blood boil. He truly believed he was in control, that he could wave away his crimes as mere “misunderstandings.” This utter contempt for Amelia’s feelings, his belief that he could still manipulate her, was a personal insult, a specific cruelty that made him seem even more depraved.

“Julian,” Amelia said, her voice clear and cold. “We need to talk. Face to face. No games. No lawyers.”

There was a brief pause on Julian’s end. “Oh? Getting serious, are we? Fine. Where would you like to meet? Somewhere discreet, I presume?” His tone was still laced with an irritating smugness.

“The old hunting cabin,” Amelia replied, her voice unwavering. “Tomorrow morning. Just us.”

Another pause, a slightly longer one this time. Julian was clearly surprised by her choice of location, a place steeped in their shared, untainted history. “The cabin, you say? How sentimental. Very well, Amelia. Tomorrow morning. And do try to compose yourself. We wouldn’t want any hysterics, now would we?” He ended the call before Amelia could respond, his arrogance still intact.

Amelia slowly lowered the phone, her knuckles white. Her face was set, a mask of steely resolve. “He thinks he’s going to charm me, manipulate me,” she said, her voice a low growl. “He thinks I’m still the naive little sister.”

Serena stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on Amelia’s shoulder. “He underestimates you, Amelia. He underestimates Lena. And that will be his downfall.” She pulled a small, sleek pistol from her waistband, checking its clip. “I’ll be with you. Discreetly. If anything goes wrong, I’ll be there.”

Amelia nodded, her gaze fixed on the ledger. Julian believed he held all the cards. He was confident he could outwit his grieving sister, unaware that she was armed with the truth, and backed by a jaded former associate and a determined twelve-year-old girl. He was walking straight into a trap, one built from his own buried secrets. The confrontation beckoned, and for the first time, I felt a flicker of hope that justice, however brutal, might finally be served.
