The federal fallout arrived swiftly, but not in the way I expected. Instead of flashing lights and arrests, a new, insidious attack began. We were still holed up in the motel, waiting for a response from Agent Kincaid, when the news broke.
Samuel’s phone buzzed with an emergency alert. He tapped it, and a local television news channel filled the small screen. Brenda Gable, Hallowell’s Chief Campaign Strategist, stood at a podium, her face grave, framed by the Philadelphia city seal.
“Good morning,” she began, her voice dripping with practiced sincerity. “I’m here today on behalf of Council President Richard Hallowell, to address a matter of extreme urgency and public safety.”
My heart pounded. I knew this was coming.
“It has come to our attention,” Brenda continued, her eyes sweeping across the reporters, “that a rogue individual, identified as Elena Ross, a former City Council staffer, is not only responsible for a series of alarming security breaches at municipal facilities but is also believed to be the leader of a radical eco-terrorist cell.”
I gasped, a sharp, disbelieving sound. Eco-terrorist. The sheer audacity of it.
“Ms. Ross,” Brenda pressed on, her voice rising in urgency, “has stolen highly sensitive bio-hazardous materials from secure city sites. Her actions pose an immediate and severe threat to the public health and safety of every Philadelphian.”
Samuel’s face was grim. “They’re trying to delegitimize you. Turn you into a public enemy.”
On screen, Brenda Gable held up a blurred, grainy photo of me, edited to look menacing. “We urge all citizens to be vigilant. If you see Elena Ross, do not approach her. She is considered armed and dangerous.”
Then, the final, devastating blow. “A city-wide arrest warrant has been issued for Elena Ross, with a $50,000 reward for information leading to her apprehension.”
My face flashed across the screen, superimposed with the words “WANTED: DANGEROUS FUGITIVE.” The news anchor came back on, repeating the warnings, showing the edited photo.
Samuel stared at the screen, then at me. “They’ve officially branded you an eco-terrorist. A $50,000 bounty. They’ve cut off every single avenue of public help you might have had left.”
I felt a chilling realization. Hallowell wasn’t just trying to silence me; he was trying to erase me. To make me a pariah, a threat, someone no one would dare help. He was willing to sacrifice the public’s trust, create mass hysteria, all to protect his empire of lies. My options had just narrowed to a single, dangerous path.
