Chapter 14: The Escape Attempt

#content-1

The legal noose around Marcus tightened with astonishing speed. Sarah had compiled an ironclad case: the forged Reed Innovations documents, David Chen’s sworn testimony with supporting financial records, the pattern of Marcus’s past shell companies and their suspicious bankruptcies, totaling over $250,000 in untraceable funds, and Chloe’s damning recording. Criminal fraud charges were formally filed, and an arrest warrant was issued.

Marcus, however, was not one to face consequences. He realized the game was up. I had heard whispers through Sarah’s legal network that he was quietly attempting to sell off any remaining personal assets, attempting to liquidate what little he had left. His usual brazen confidence had been replaced by a desperate scramble.

Chloe, meanwhile, continued her independent vigil. She had set up discreet alerts on Marcus’s old, almost-dormant social media accounts, cross-referencing names and images. She even taught herself to monitor public flight manifests, a skill she picked up from online forums, looking for any unusual activity. Her dedication was both admirable and terrifying.

One Tuesday evening, my phone rang. It was Chloe, her voice tight with urgency.

“Mom, you need to see this,” she said, her breath catching. “I think Marcus is trying to skip town. Tonight.”

My heart leaped into my throat. “What? How?”

“I set up an alert for variations of his name, and for Liam O’Connell’s name, on several flight manifest sites,” Chloe explained, her words tumbling out quickly. “Nothing direct, but I found a reservation that just popped up. A last-minute flight to a small island nation in the Caribbean – St. Lucia. It’s under the name ‘M. Callahan,’ but the flight time, the timing… it fits.”

She rattled off the details: flight number AA1870, departing from JFK at 11:45 PM, destination Hewanorra International Airport, St. Lucia. The ticket had been purchased within the last hour, under an alias: “Michael Calloway.”

“St. Lucia has no extradition treaty with the US, Mom,” Chloe stated, her voice grim. “He’s trying to get away.” The precision of her research, down to the non-extradition treaty, was chilling. It demonstrated Marcus’s meticulous planning, his long-standing readiness to flee.

My blood ran cold. He wasn’t just attempting to evade the current charges; he was trying to vanish entirely, to become a ghost. This was a monumental twist, a desperate, final act of cowardice. The audacity of it, planning to abandon all his responsibilities and disappear into the night.

“How did you get this, Chloe?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“I just know how to look, Mom,” she replied, a hint of pride in her tone. “His old public social media had a few photos from a vacation he took years ago. He always wore the same distinctive leather travel bag. And there was a comment from Liam about ‘Michael Calloway’ being his fake ID name when they were younger, just for fun. I put it all together.”

The specific detail of the “distinctive leather travel bag” and Liam’s throwaway comment about an old alias were small, mundane pieces of information that Chloe had brilliantly pieced together. It was a testament to her meticulous observation, a direct, personal piece of evidence.

“I’m sending you the screenshot of the reservation and the flight tracking info now,” she added. “The flight leaves in less than three hours.”

I immediately forwarded everything to Sarah, instructing her to contact law enforcement. The sheer speed required to intercept him was daunting. Sarah promised to move mountains.

I stared at the screenshot Chloe sent. A single seat, one-way, to a country designed for hiding. Marcus’s arrogance, his belief that he could simply escape justice, was sickening. He wouldn’t face his responsibilities; he would simply disappear, leaving behind a trail of ruin and unanswered questions. The thought of him getting away, casually abandoning everyone he had harmed, including me and Cassandra and David Chen, filled me with a fresh surge of fury.

His attempt to flee was a final, egregious act of betrayal, confirming his true character. The specific details, uncovered by my daughter, provided an urgent window into his desperation. The clock was ticking.
