Chapter 14: The Fatal Ultimatum

#content-1

The recording continued, the muffled sounds of a furious struggle, chairs scraping, a gasping breath. Julian’s voice, now raw with desperation, pierced through the background noise.

“You can’t do this, old man!” he shrieked, his voice cracking with rage and panic. “They’ll come for me! For all of us! Don’t you understand what they’ll do?”

Arthur’s voice, though fainter, remained resolute. “Then face the consequences of your choices, Julian. You made your bed. I will not let you take down everything I built with you!”

“You’re condemning me!” Julian screamed, the sound of glass shattering in the background. “You’re signing my death warrant!”

Then, a chilling, final declaration, Julian’s voice, cold and devoid of any semblance of filial affection.

“You won’t get a chance to change it, old man.”

The recording abruptly ended, replaced by the faint hum of my computer fan.

Silence. A profound, terrifying silence that swallowed every other sound in my studio. The implication of Julian’s words hung heavy in the air, a poisonous vapor. “You won’t get a chance to change it.” It wasn’t a threat of legal action or financial reprisal. It was a direct, chilling promise of violence.

My breath caught in my throat, a cold hand gripping my heart. Arthur’s “accident.” The preliminary forensic report hinting at tampering. The hidden microphone. Julian’s gaslighting. It all culminated in this one, horrifying truth. Julian hadn’t just accidentally caused Arthur’s death. He had orchestrated it. Deliberately.

Tears streamed down my face, hot and stinging, but they were not tears of grief for Arthur. They were tears of utter despair, of a mother’s profound horror at the monster her son had become. The son I had nurtured, loved, and protected, had deliberately ended his own father’s life.

The casual, callous cruelty of Julian’s words, caught forever on that recording, was a physical blow. It wasn’t an abstract financial crime; it was a deeply personal, unforgivable act of patricide. This was the ultimate betrayal, a wound so deep it felt as if it had cleaved my very soul.

I listened to the clip again, compelled by a morbid need to hear it, to imprint it on my mind. Julian’s panicked, desperate pleas turning into a cold, calculated threat. The shift in his tone was stark, undeniable. The “unfortunate braking failure” was a lie. The “loving son protecting his mother” was a lie. Everything was a lie.

I wiped my face with a trembling hand, trying to steady my racing heart. My world had shattered, not with a bang, but with the quiet, chilling click of a recording ending. My husband had not died in an accident. He had been murdered, by our son, Julian.

I closed my eyes, picturing Arthur’s face, his kind eyes, his booming laugh. He had been trying to protect me, to save his legacy, to save Julian. And Julian, in his desperate greed, had silenced him forever. The irony was a cruel twist of the knife. Arthur’s efforts to keep Julian from the Syndicate had led directly to his death at Julian’s hand, forcing Julian to try and sell the catalog to the Syndicate anyway.

Dominique called back, her voice tentative.

“Evelyn? Did you… did you listen to it?”

“Yes, Dominique,” I replied, my voice raspy, barely recognizable as my own. “I listened.”

“I’m so sorry, Evelyn,” she whispered, her voice filled with genuine sorrow. She understood. She knew the implications of those final words.

“This is it, isn’t it?” I said, a grim resolve now settling over me, pushing aside the raw grief. “The proof.”

“It’s more than proof, Evelyn,” Dominique said, her voice now firm. “It’s… everything.”

I ended the call, knowing that the journey was not over. The truth was out, but justice was far from secured. Julian had delivered his fatal ultimatum to Arthur. Now, it was time for me to deliver mine to him. The cliffhanger wasn’t a question; it was a devastating confirmation. A mother’s worst fear had come true, and now she had to act.
