At His 70th Birthday, My Son Fed Me Dog Food—He Didn't Know I Was Already Tracking His Lies
Daniel, attempting to regain control of the narrative, cleared his throat. He pulled a sleek, black leather portfolio from his briefcase and placed it squarely on the polished table, slightly ajar. He wanted to project an image of professional competence and financial transparency.
“Dad, I’ve brought a comprehensive overview of your financial situation,” Daniel began, his voice taking on a rehearsed, corporate tone. “As you know, I’ve been diligently managing everything to ensure your comfort and long-term security.” He paused, glancing around the table, trying to catch Sarah’s eye for reassurance.
Dr. Thorne, however, suddenly pushed back his chair. “Excuse me for a moment,” he said, pulling out his phone. “I need to take this. It’s an urgent call from the hospital.” He stepped out of the room, leaving the four family members alone.
The sudden departure seemed to fluster Daniel even more. He stammered slightly, losing his train of thought. “As I was saying… your assets are well-diversified, and we’ve been very careful with your investments, making sure everything is aligned with your best interests.” He gestured vaguely towards his open portfolio.
Sarah, seated across from Daniel, shifted uncomfortably in her chair. Her eyes, drawn by the slightly open portfolio, inadvertently glanced at a page within. She saw a column of figures, and then, starkly, Ernest’s full name printed at the top of a document. Below it, her eyes registered a specific transaction number and a large dollar amount she didn’t recognize, listed alongside a cryptic description.
Her breath caught in her throat. It was just a fleeting glimpse, a fraction of a second, before Daniel, seemingly sensing her gaze, casually adjusted the portfolio, closing it slightly. But it was enough. The image was burned into her mind. It was a transaction she had not seen on the bank statement, suggesting another hidden layer to Daniel’s deceptions.
Cassandra, oblivious to Sarah’s silent discovery, cleared her throat impatiently. “Daniel, perhaps we should focus on the immediate future. Ernest’s care. The doctor mentioned his cognitive function is excellent, so we can finally discuss the Arizona options without any ‘confusion.'” Her voice was smooth, a veiled jab at Ernest, a fresh instance of the petty cruelty of their gaslighting.
Ernest saw the flicker of alarm in Sarah’s eyes, the moment her gaze locked onto the portfolio. He watched her process the information, her brow furrowing slightly. He knew what she had seen. Another piece of the puzzle, confirming the intricate web of deceit.
“Indeed, Cassandra,” Ernest replied, his voice calm, directing his attention to her. He was allowing Sarah to come to her own conclusions, to let the evidence speak for itself. “My cognitive function is indeed excellent. Which makes the conversation about my ‘care’ all the more… interesting.”
Daniel, still oblivious, launched into a summary of his supposed prudent financial management. He spoke of growth, stability, and the carefully selected, “top-tier” facilities they had supposedly researched for Ernest’s “future needs.” He even mentioned the “Oasis Gardens” name again, casually, as if it were a routine, benevolent consideration.
But Sarah wasn’t listening. Her gaze kept returning to Daniel’s closed portfolio, a new suspicion blooming in her mind. The specific, unfamiliar transaction she had glimpsed now haunted her. The meeting was set to explode.
