Chapter 16: Morning in Piedmont Park

The auditorium fell into a stunned silence, broken only by the whirring of news cameras now fully deployed and focused on the stage. Chantal Dubois stood frozen, the crumpled subpoena still clutched in her hand. Her perfect composure had shattered, replaced by a frantic scramble for words.

“This is… this is an administrative oversight!” she stammered, her voice thin and high, completely unlike her usual commanding tone. “Corporate records… a misunderstanding…”

She tried to glance at her lawyers, but they were already surrounded by the DA investigators, their faces grave as they reviewed the asset freeze orders. Councilman Gaines, visibly uncomfortable, still kept his back to her, fiddling with his microphone, his eyes darting to the audience.

“My family… Dubois Legacy Holdings… we are a cornerstone of this community!” she insisted, her voice rising in desperation. “This is slander! Political sabotage!”

She tried to rally, to find her footing, but the words were hollow, ringing with a profound lack of conviction. Her eyes darted around, searching for an escape, for someone to intervene. There was no one.

Her gaze landed on me, a desperate, hateful glare. But I met it with a quiet resolve. I was not gloating. There was no joy, only a grim satisfaction that justice was finally taking its course.

With a choked sound, she dropped her notes on the microphone stand. The papers fluttered to the stage floor. She took one shaky step back, then another, before abruptly turning away from the podium.

She strode stiffly towards a side service door at the edge of the stage, her high heels clicking rapidly. Her escape was not graceful; it was a panicked retreat.

The DA investigators, however, were prepared. As she reached the door, two of them detached from the group and moved swiftly to intercept her.

I watched as Maya Barksdale, her face entirely professional, followed them. They disappeared through the side door, into the less glamorous corridors of the Civic Center.

Minutes later, the news tickers on the televisions in the lobby would begin to flash: “BREAKING: Prominent Atlanta Real Estate Executive Chantal Dubois Detained After Debate Soundcheck.”

Outside, in the civic center’s parking garage, she was formally served with the multi-count indictment papers for grand larceny and deed fraud. There was no scene, no struggle. She simply slumped against her black SUV, her face pale, as uniformed officers led her away in handcuffs. Her empire, built on stolen land and hidden truths, was finally crumbling.
