Chapter 15: Mounting Pressure

#content-1

Silas Lockhart, accustomed to controlling every narrative, found himself increasingly off-balance. The anonymous leaks, amplified by the rival newspapers, created a pervasive buzz of suspicion he couldn’t simply sue into silence.

He tried to counter. He issued polished public statements praising his company’s “ethical foundations.” He dramatically increased his philanthropic donations, announcing a new wing for a hospital, and a sizable contribution to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

His PR fixer, Marcus, worked tirelessly, planting stories about Silas’s generosity and vision.

But the whispers persisted. At society gatherings, I saw it firsthand. Mrs. Finch, who had so pointedly avoided me, now cast furtive, uncertain glances. Dr. Albright, usually effusive in his praise of Silas, merely nodded politely when his name was mentioned.

The initial, unwavering admiration for Silas began to show cracks. Observant members of society, especially those who remembered the mill acquisition, now looked at him with a flicker of doubt in their eyes.

His public appearances, once triumphal, now seemed tinged with a defensive edge. The unaddressed rumors, subtly fueled by Amelia’s strategic leaks, had changed the landscape.

Silas was still powerful, but he was no longer unimpeachable. The city was watching, and for the first time, not all of them were cheering.
