Chapter 15: The Aftermath of Ruins

#content-1

By late afternoon, the ruins of Kincaid’s empire were already being systematically dismantled. Arthur watched from a distance as tow trucks arrived at Kincaid’s once-opulent downtown condominium, hauling away his luxury cars. Estate agents, somber-faced, entered the building, preparing for forced liquidation.

His firm, Holloway & Kincaid, was officially in forced receivership. The private lenders, swift and merciless, seized every remaining commercial asset to cover the defaulted bond terms. The name, once a symbol of influence, was now just a label on a bankrupt entity.

Inside City Hall, the transitions were equally swift. Council President Albright, true to his word, had submitted his letter of resignation. The city manager announced his immediate departure due to “health reasons.”

Nora Gable, no longer the naive assistant, stood at the podium in the press briefing room, her posture confident and her voice clear. She had taken charge of the transition press team, her face now resolute.

“Today,” Nora announced to a packed room of reporters, “the City Council has officially recorded the forfeiture of the Pier 14 waterfront property. This land, originally intended for public benefit, will now revert directly to the community land trust.”

She held up a thick binder. “Full public records, including the original land audit, Leo Carver’s statements, and the internal dispatch codes proving the suppression of information, are now being released to the public.”

Arthur saw the flicker of pride in her eyes. Nora, the unwitting accomplice, had become a fierce advocate for transparency, her own career now built on truth. The public record, once twisted by Kincaid, was finally being straightened.

Chloe stood quietly beside Arthur, her hand resting on his arm. The legal and financial gears had ground Kincaid to dust, stripping him of everything he had built and betrayed. The land was safe. The truth was out. But a chilling realization lingered in the air. The system, though it had devoured one of its own, remained.
