I felt a desperate urge to confront Vivian directly. Armed with the locket, the journal, and Mr. Tanaka’s research, I sought her out. I still held a sliver of hope for a shred of decency, a chance for Leo to regain his future without a public scandal.
I found her at a benefit luncheon, surrounded by her usual coterie of fawning acquaintances. Her smile faltered when she saw me approaching, the usual iciness returning to her eyes.
“Isabella,” she said, her voice dripping with disdain. “What fresh delusion have you brought to ruin my afternoon?”
I laid the locket and the opened journal on the pristine white tablecloth between us. “This is your mother’s legacy, Vivian,” I said, my voice low but firm. “The truth of your family.”
She glanced down, her eyes narrowing. She picked up the locket, then tossed it back onto the table with a dismissive flick of her wrist.
“Fabrications,” she scoffed, a sneer twisting her lips. “And you, Isabella, are a delusional gold-digger. Get out of my sight.”
Her callous dismissal of her own mother’s story and her continued contempt for me felt like a shard of ice in my heart.
